So you want to learn more about E-Learning maybe you’re completely new to the subject and have no idea what it all means or maybe you’ve been asked to find out more about E-Learning and you don’t really know where to start you probably have a ton of questions like what’s an LMS where can I get one what’s content do I create it or does someone else do that for me what is SCORM do I need one of those two will all this work with my HR tools can it speak in numerous languages will we’ve one sign-on is it secure what is that tin will factor. Okay, let me break it down for you step-by-step let’s start at the very beginning.

What is E-Learning?

E-earning is technology-driven learning simple, right there are two main components of eLearning

  • First, there’s content which is the material that you want your learners to learn.
  • Second, the LMS stands for the learning management system.

First, let’s look at what content is all about online content can be broadly divided into two types live training and recorded training live training also referred to as instructor-led training it is generally presented as a webinar using tools like WebEx, Adobe Connect, GoToMeeting and the live recorded content. Live recording can be presented in different formats like a video recorded, webinars, documents, slideshows, and self-paced SCORM courses.

You adapt the style and type of your content to match the culture of your organization as you build your E-learning system for your company, you’ll want to consider the learning goals and objectives the surroundings during which the education takes place and also the tone or feel of the presentation as an example.

Let’s suppose an example, Here is vidya is a bank manager, Rekha is a cashier, vidya’s training might include account security the legal aspects of banking and other sensitive information. she might need highly interactive scenario-based courses coupled with live webinars for vidya that type of experiential learning with some access to live instructors would be effective and memorable, Rekha on the other hand, might need more basic content that is focused on customer service his courses could be self-paced SCORM courses with real-life storylines that allow him to encounter actual client service challenges while not having to interrupt his daily routine.

There are easy to use tools that almost anyone can employ to build simple online SCORM courses and there are lots of content development companies that can help you build multimedia-rich highly interactive content.

What you might call the language of E-Learning SCORM?

SCORM is a broadly used standard that connects the content to the learning management system the LMS SCORM is what tells the LMS that a learner has completed a course or that she answered a question correctly and so forth the tin can API also called X API or experience API is an update to SCORM further expanding its flexibility.

Now, what is the LMS?

The LMS is like the architecture and structure of eLearning the LMS manages and tracks who is learning what and how well they’re doing at learning the content within the LMS blog posts E-Learning courses webinars classroom white papers videos can all be used to teach your learners the LMS schedules the different participants launches the courses tracks attendance records and generates reports.

The LMS can notify participants and managers of achievements areas that need more attention and even generate certifications and the LMS can be integrated with other systems such as your CRM, time unit and company portal single sign-on or SSO integrations are common.

Advantages & Disadvantages of E-Learning

Advantages

Flexible:- In a regular kind of learning, the student may have a fixed routine in which they have to sit together and learn from the instructor. The duration of the class is fixed. The topics to be mentioned within the category also are mounted.

Anytime access to the resources:- Students need access to different kinds of resources. These resources will be notes, theories, diagrams, etc. In e-learning, the resources are made available to the students at all times of the day. So the students will use them anytime and anyplace they need.

Immediate result or feedback:- In the case of regular leaning, the tests are taken by paper and pen. These papers are unit then checked by the lecturer’s and then the results are declared.

More retention:- The use of smart technology is very less in regular teaching methods. But in the case of e-learning, there is a generous use of digital resources included presentations, multimedia that includes images and videos, etc.

Cost-effective:- When a student is engaged in regular learning, they have to go to the institute regularly. They need transportation costs. The teachers teaching the students get a salary from the institutes. This adds it to the cost and also the maintenance cost of the institute also adds up in that.

Disadvantages

More retention:- The use of smart technology is very less in regular teaching methods. But in the case of e-learning, there is a generous use of digital resources included presentations, multimedia that includes images and videos, etc.

No control:- In the case of regular learning, the learning is controlled by the teacher. The teacher motivates the students to study. In this case, the students become careless. They may neglect the fact that they have to study. There is no motivation for the. No regularity exists in e-learning. This was the major drawback of e-learning.

No practical work:- In the regular methods of teaching, regular practice sessions are organized for the students. The students may be provided with videos in which the practical use of their knowledge is shown but that is not enough. The practical cannot be fully explained until they do it by themselves. This is a great drawback.

Conclusion:

E-leaning uses technology. These are some advantages and some disadvantages also. The technology used in E-learning improves the understanding of the student. They are able to retain more knowledge. And it makes studying flexible for them. But it becomes a drawback once the students take it with no consideration. They become lazier for studying. They neglect the need to learn. So that’s E-learning and its advantages & Disadvantages in a nutshell not so overwhelming.
