Being creative is not everyone’s cup of tea and if you feel no creative inspirations knocking your doors every time you have to do something then you’re not alone. But to your great luck, dear reader, you have stumbled upon the pandoras box of writing… Here are some strategies one can use to cultivate creativity and excel in writing .

What is a creative essay?

testing your ability to explore ideas and explain concepts to an outside party, these essays give you a lot of freedom to explore different kinds of topics and ideas when you’re being “creative”. They are a great way to flaunt one’s research skills as well the beauty of one’s language and writing capabilities… But with the freedom of being able to write whatever and however comes the herculean task of figuring out where to start.

Think about your reader

One needs to have a thorough knowledge on the type of audience your essay will be exposed to. what type of knowledge they will have on the topic and what can they take away from what you have written? What sort of essays are predictable and what can be taken as an element of surprise. Every single thing matters, so that one can keep the readers hooked to the essay.

For example, take teachers or university lecturers. They have given you the topic, so they a have a clear idea on what sort of answers they will get. So… surprise them! Be original but let your essay be engraved into their minds with the unusual approach or structure. But never go too far, keep it simple and understandable because they have to mark hundreds of similar essays and will not have the time and patience to figure out your essay if its complex.

I simple words, keep your readers interested, because that’s what creative writing is all about.

Three-act structure

A writing device used extensively in modern writing; three-act structure is a great way to structure your essay and go about it. It goes something like this:

  1. Set-up – the introduction. It has to be catchy yet subtle because this is where the scene is established and yet the place that makes the impression on the reader, whether to continue reading or not.
  2. Confrontation – the core of the essay is discussed here, and the arguments are built up using tid-bits of various info and facts finally building up to the overall conclusion
  3. Resolution – the conclusion. A summary, where all the loose ends are tied up with the writer’s opinion and the final climax takes place.

I layman’s terms structuring the essay beforehand using any technique helps one arrive on the main point earlier and prevents one from beating around the bush or waffling about the topic.

An attention-grabbing opening

A common piece of advice in while writing is to use an attention-grabbing opening. One way of doing this is to disrupt the chronology of events and begin with a ‘flashback’, which transports the reader directly back to the midst of the action. This builds up interest and is exciting for the reader.

For example, if one was writing about the world war, instead of directly starting with the slow key factor events that gradually built up to the war, it could be more interesting to start from how bloody and gruesome battles were fought and then go something like this with a rhetorical question: “How did the world end up in such a situation?”  though not the bookish way or degree worth method of writing an essay, it’ll surely be an out of the blue element.

Editing

Rarely someone gets it right the first time… Editing is a trial-and-error process. But the Digi world makes it all the easier, where one can just chop and change- replace the parts where they are the best and are looking apt with just a click. All one needs is a good sense of the flow of the essay and of course ensuring the spelling and grammar. never submit essays without proofreading them first.

And finally… record your ideas

Inspiration strikes whenever, wherever… you may never know.. It’s surprising to know from great creative writers, the places and times ideas for their works have struck them.

Some things will always be easier for some, though not for all. However, practice makes a man perfect and, in this case, at least in a good position to produce something one can be proud of.

Always remember to re-read and proofread your essay multiple times… If possible, have someone to do it as well.. It’s surprising what mistakes another set of eyes can find out that you make!

Lastly, know that you do not have to be perfect. Your skills will improve over time with practice only. But never let the fear of not being able to produce a ‘perfect’ piece stop you from beginning itself.
