LGBT is the abbreviation stands for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender movements are social movements that support LGBT people in society. The social movements focused on equality of rights and they focused on liberation such as the gay liberation movement took forward in the 19600s and 1970s. The homophile movement of the 1950s is an example for earlier movements which focused on self-help and self-acceptance.

A turning point for gay liberation came on 28 June 1969, patrons of Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village fought back against ongoing humiliation, harassment, and brutality by police. They expressed their anger, sorrow, thirst for freedom and fought for it. This immense hard work led to the concept of celebration of pride month. These days are dedicated to the LGBT community to celebrate themselves against discrimination and social ostracisation. The gay liberation movement of the 1970s led to the emergence of various political organizations in Britain, US, and other parts of the world. The 20th century showed a new era of gay celebrity power.

At the same time, a quieter gay rights battle has been going on in the workplace. As a result of this battle. A large number of companies are now treating LGBT employees the same as their straight peers. Countries like Australia, Finland, and several central European and Central American countries now promote same-sex civil unions or civil partnerships. And same-sex marriage has become legal in Argentina, Belgium, Brazil, Norway, Spain, South Africa, Sweden and other countries. But still, homosexuality remains illegal in several countries (40 of the 53 Commonwealth countries)

INFLUENCE OF CELEBRITIES

The influence of celebrities in empowering LGBT community was praiseworthy. A lot of celebrities revealed their gender identity as LGBT. This encouraged a lot of people to come forward and express their own identity in terms of sex. In April 1997, American actress Ellen DeGeneres opened on national television enunciating a new era of celebrity power. The 21st century showed new legal gains for gay and lesbian couples as a result of effort of countless organizations and individuals through internet and direct mail campaign networking .Today it’s a very big list of celebrities who expressed their identity as LGBT and supporting LGBT community and find testosterone clinics near me. From Miley Cyrus to Anne Hathaway, have taken steps in supporting LGBT rights.

EQUALITY IN WORKPLACE

Over the last decade, huge strides were taken by organizations of all sectors in supporting LGBT employees and creating an inclusive workplace. Organizations all over the world have put forward various policies to support LGBT community. Various awareness and training programs were conducted among managers and senior staff about strategies for supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities. They adopted an anti-discriminatory policy in promotion and hiring practices. Thus modern business is focusing more on a gender-neutral business environment.

In India, the development of LGBT empowerment was considerably slow. We Indians are more influenced by stereotypes and beliefs. We show strong resistance to change especially when it comes to gender and religion. But gradually the strong wave of LGBT movements in western countries started to affect the Indian Community also. In urban India with the help of social media and corporate initiatives, the awareness about LGBT rights became strong. On 24th August 2017, the Supreme Court of India gave the Indian LGBT community the freedom to express their sexual orientation. It is protected under the country’s Right to Privacy law.

Consensual gay sex was legalized on 6th September 2018 by Supreme Court. India took a shift in understanding homosexuality from a sin, taboo, or crime and pathology to a normal variant of human sexuality. Today the LGBT community is protected by the Court of Law in India. People started to reveal their own sexual identity to society without any inhibition or fear and do not hesitate by purchasing pride flags.

In my opinion world peace shall be acquired only through giving each individual their rights and protecting the same. Treating people as a human is more important than addressing them as either men or women. All are free to express their gender identity, they don’t have to stop themselves in the same because of disagreements from the majority. The world today is growing towards a gender-neutral world. The developing countries like India had a lot more to go but were still in their growing phase. As someone puts it in “It’s a world of skilled “every individual has equal rights to live in this society. Respecting others’ identities is the most important thing. Treating others in the way you want to be treated is the most mental revolution to be adopted for a new world.
