There are many types of celebrations on every culture of this world. These festivals lead to human gatherings, joys and lasting memories. But when we celebrate every festival, are we harming the environment?we have to think. Every year we cause a lot of damage to the environment through festivals. Which are they? let’s check it.

Every year during festivals like Diwali or even during private celebrations and ceremonies, firecrackers are burned, leading to the release of toxic gases and severe air pollution. There is a yearly increase in the level of Respirable Suspended Particulate Material (RSPM) in the air due to the bursting of firecrackers.

As part of festivals we fly sky lanterns. There is a possibility of forest fire due to this. It affects the ecosystem of many species. Forest fire kill a large number of animals and cause deforestation. A lot of plastic waste is generated after every festival. It harms our environment. Plastic is a non degradable material. It destroys various microorganisms in the soil and changes the soil structure. If these plastic wastes reaches the sea, it harmfully affect the life of species in the sea. Many such problems are caused to the environment by festivals.

From  stages and sound systems, to food stalls and portable loos, festivals can use over 30,000 megawatts of electricity over a weekend, this is similar to the equivalent of electricity that the people of the city of Bath would use! 23,500 tones of wastes are generated every year at festivals, 68% of which goes directly into landfill. Much of this is comprised of single-use plastics (such as bottles ,straws, food trays and cable ties), as well as microplastic pollution in the form of glitter and toiletries.

There are plenty of ways to cut down on the amount of waste you generate and the amount you leave behind at a festival. Always remember the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If you can’t avoid producing waste, try to make sure it is reusable or recyclable to avoid sending anything to landfill sites. This is how we can protect our environment. Let’s celebrate festivals in an environment friendly way.
