The Isles of Greece, the Isles of Greece!

Where burning Sappho loved and sung,

Where grew the arts of war and peace,

Where Delos rose, and Phoebus sprung!

This poetic verse by Lord Byron reflects the allure and unmatched charm of the country of Greece. These lines speak volumes about Greek historical narratives and world-renowned mythology that attracts visitors from far and wide. Greece holds a special place in my heart because it was the birthplace of the emergence of civilization along with unexplored archaeological wonders.

It’s a country that houses diverse landscapes from deep crystal-blue beaches to rugged mountain terrains that offer endless opportunities for discovering nature in it’s realest and purest form. The most intriguing aspect of Greece is that the majority of the wonders of this country are still shrouded behind a veil and continue to be an enigma. I would like to take you on an exhilarating journey while trying to shed light on some of the exquisite sites that make Greece an exotic travel destination.

Melissani Lake Cave: The Subterranean Marvel of Kefalonia Greece

This clandestine lake cave in Greece has an enthralling mystical aura and may even be mistaken as an artistic masterpiece by Van Gogh when seen in pictures. On the island of Kefalonia, the Melissani Cave is situated about 2 kilometers from the Sami settlement.

The Cave of the Nymphs is the name given to this grotto in Greek mythical interpretations and according to a myth, the cave was named for the nymph Melissanthi, who took her own life since God Pan did not return her undying love. This site can be explored through a 15-minute boat ride during which the boat passes through narrow passages lined with thickets and forested regions while the centuries-old walls are lined with stalactites. Surprisingly, several of the stalactites resemble dolphins, who according to folklore were the companions and messengers of the nymphs.

An earthquake caused a portion of the cave’s roof to fall a few thousand years ago, which created a grand opening on the roof for the sunlight to trickle through. The beauty of the lake cave is mesmerizing as at noon when the sun lies directly overhead, the light reflecting off the turquoise-blue waters creates a surreal illusion that makes the entire Cave appear to be illuminated by blue light.

It feels like heaven has opened it’s doors and the visitors are floating on a carpet in the air. During this captivating experience, the boatmen reveal historical information with a blend of Greek mythology, enriching the Greek adventure.

Tinos: The Authentic Greek Island Experience

One of the popular island vacation spots in the Cyclades, deep within the Aegean is Tinos, also known as the “handmade island” by philosopher Cornelius Castoriadis. It’s an ideal location for nature enthusiasts, architecture, art aficionados, and gastronomy experts!  The church on the island, Panagia Megalochari, is one of the most popular destinations for Greek pilgrims.

Every year, people from all over the nation come to this massive church to venerate the miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary that is kept there. The story goes that the locals had learned the secrets of his craft from the renowned antique sculptor Phidias. Their magnificent craftsmanship may be seen in chapels, fountains, arches, and pigeon lofts.

The rustic architecture of the whitewashed villages evokes a sense of calmness and serenity as one walks along the cobblestone footpaths. One can learn about the inhabitants’ inherent artistic dispositions while strolling around its picturesque streets. The stunning marble fountains and spectacular artistic lintels resemble needlework, as they give this stone and marble settlement (made of local resources) a distinctive appearance. The streaks of rich deep blue colour on the doors and windowsills of the houses enhance the beauty of the villages.

Uninhabited areas, isolated beaches, walking trails, famous pigeon motels, windmills, and diverse landscapes are some of the features of Tinos. There is also the yearly Tinos Food Paths event for people who are particularly interested in experiencing the flavorful island lifestyle.

Each May, locals and visitors to the island come together for a path across the island that takes participants to the best dining locations. Villages all around the island host events, but Tinos’ fish market—where people prepare their best delicacies every evening—is where most of the activity takes place. Highlights included delicious lamb with Aegean pumpkin and cuttlefish cooked in its ink with noodles from Tinos. Visitors will be enthralled by Tinos’ delectable gastronomic offerings throughout the year.

Zagori: The Quintessential Greek Mountain Experience

The Slavic name “Zagori” means “beyond the mountains”. It’s a destination with untapped potential and unlimited possibilities while the magnificence of the destination keeps unfolding itself like the different layers of an onion. Zagori is the perfect site for adventure seekers and the bountiful explorations one can undertake while being connected to nature get the visitors’ adrenaline pumping!

From deep gorges, challenging and intricate hiking paths, glacial rivers, and ancient stone settlements infused with traditional culture and heritage, Zagori encompasses all aspects of a Zen lifestyle. The masterfully crafted stone architecture, like stone steps and breathtaking stone bridges, seems straight from a Disney fairytale.

The serenity of the mountainous landscape is unparalleled as you hear sounds of water gushing into the rivers and the wind whispering among the trees as if narrating a historic ballad.  It comprises 46 isolated rustic stone settlements called Zagorohoria.

The small, scattered houses are set amid the rugged terrain inculcating bewildering stonework and ancient wooden doors against a bucolic setting. The countryside is truly the epitome of authenticity and elegance. Zagori is also a paradise for hikers as well with the hiking trails traversed by pathways lined with orchids and wildflowers in myriad hues and colours.

The Vikos Gorge is an eminent attraction with its high limestone walls reaching heights of 1040 metres, holding the Guinness World Record for being the deepest canyon in the world relative to its breadth. Hiking from one end of the gorge to the other is an adventurous venture along a steep, rocky path lined with pine-clad forests and lake promenades offering panoramic views.

The visit to Zagori is incomplete without the mention of it’s delectable local cuisine. Pies are the undeniable star of the region; there are over 178 different recipes, including blatsaria (a maize flour crust with a feta and wild herb filling) and ‘lazy pie’, which is made with filo pastry with cheese, egg, and yogurt filling. Robust beef stews, butter-fried liver with spices and breadcrumbs, and freshly caught eel grilled in the oven on an earthenware tile are classic finger-licking meals.

To encapsulate, Greece essentially serves as an adventurers’ blank canvas, presenting a tapestry of historical marvels, varied landscapes, and cultural immersion. It satisfies the wanderlust of those who are drawn to the beauty of the present and the secrets of the past. Its charm stems from its capacity to reveal numerous layers of history, culture, and unmatched natural beauty.

With historical and archaeological wonders just waiting to be uncovered at every turn, Greece offers explorers an enticing voyage through time. Each location bears a piece of the past, enticing curiosity and sparking the imagination. The Greek islands’ secret coves, remote beaches, and picture-perfect villages encourage exploration and provide the opportunity to uncover undiscovered treasures. I hope that someday I get the opportunity to delve into the immersive experience of travelling to Greece to embark on the path of a ‘Greek way of life’.
