Ask someone about Benjamin Franklin and you’ll probably hear about the kite. Maybe the key too. The lightning experiment. Almost nobody knows he built a musical instrument too. It was made of spinning glass bowls. Mozart and Beethoven played it. Even Marie Antoinette, the queen of France, learned to play one. Then some towns in Europe banned it. They thought it made people go insane. The instrument is called the glass armonica. For about seventy years, it was one of the most popular instruments in Europe. Then it almost disappeared. People told stories about madness, and death, and ghosts. Only in the last few decades has it slowly come back. A change in the glass made that possible. Its story is about music. But it’s also about how people get scared of new things.
How It Works
Franklin did not invent this out of nowhere. In London, in the 1750s, people had a party trick. They rubbed a wet finger around the rim of a wine glass filled with water. This made the glass “sing.” Franklin heard this trick at a concert. He thought it deserved to be a real instrument, not just a trick.
Here is how his version worked:
It had 37 glass bowls. All different sizes. They sat on one long rod.
A foot pedal turned the rod. All the bowls spun together.
The player wet their fingers and touched the spinning rims.
The wet skin rubbing on glass made each bowl hum a note. Bigger bowls gave lower notes, and smaller ones gave higher notes.
A good player could touch many bowls at once. That made full chords.
Franklin painted the rims different colors. Red for C. Orange for D. And so on. This helped players find notes without looking. He called the instrument the “armonica.” That’s the Italian word for harmony. He never patented it. By the time he passed away in 1790. 5,000 armonicas were already singing across Europe. He always said it was the invention that made him proudest. Modern versions run on a small motor instead of a foot pedal. But the basic idea has not changed in over 260 years. Wet fingers. Spinning glass. That’s it.
Musicians call it a “friction idiophone.” That’s just a fancy name for an instrument that makes sound from rubbing, not blowing or hitting. It works the same way as a wet finger on a wine glass at dinner. Franklin just found a way to tune 37 of them and play them like a keyboard.
A Favorite of Kings, Queens, and Composers
The armonica got famous fast. It made its debut in London in 1762. Composers and royals loved it.
Marianne Davies gave the first public show. She became famous almost overnight.
Mozart loved the armonica. He wrote his last piece of chamber music for it. The piece is called the Adagio and Rondo for Glass Harmonica, Flute, Oboe, Viola and Cello, written for a blind performer named Marianne Kirchgessner. He wrote her a second, simpler piece too.
Haydn met Kirchgessner in London in 1794. He may have written something for her too. But that piece is lost now.
Beethoven wrote for the armonica. So did the opera writer Donizetti.
Even Marie Antoinette gave it a try.
Then there’s Franz Anton Mesmer, a doctor in Vienna whose name gave us the word “mesmerize.” He used the armonica in his hypnotism sessions. He believed the eerie sound helped put patients into a trance. Mozart was just 16 when he first heard the armonica. He heard it at Mesmer’s house, in 1773. Later, Mesmer’s methods got so controversial that King Louis XVI set up a group to investigate them. Benjamin Franklin was on that group. The same Franklin who invented the armonica in the first place.
The Instrument That Got Banned
The rumors. By the 1780s, dark rumors were going around. Players said the armonica left them nervous. Some felt dizzy. Others just felt low for days afterward. A few even swore it could summon spirits, or make someone faint right there in their seat. One German critic, writing in 1791, warned that the sound wore down the nerves and left listeners gloomy.
The bans. Then a child reportedly died during an armonica concert in Germany, and things moved fast after that. Several towns banned the instrument by police order, blaming it for public health problems. Two of its biggest stars had health trouble too, and that only fed the rumors. Marianne Davies stopped performing. People said her nerves gave out. Kirchgessner’s career ended early too. Some blamed years of nerve damage from playing the glass.
A different explanation. For a long time, people blamed lead poisoning. Glass in the 1700s often had close to 40 percent lead in it. The paint used for the note colors had lead too. Players sat for hours with wet fingers on that glass. Lead poisoning became the easy answer for shaky hands and foggy thinking. It might not be the right one, though. Modern tests show that very little lead moves from glass to skin this way. Nobody has ever proven the lead poisoning theory. Franklin played the armonica for years and never had any symptoms. So was this really about health at all? Or was it more like a panic? A strange new sound, played mostly by women, in a time that was quick to call anything unusual in women’s health “nerves” or “hysteria.” Add in a fragile instrument, and a louder piano taking over concert halls, and you don’t need a ghost story to explain why the armonica faded.
The reputation that stuck. Nobody proved what really caused those symptoms. But the fear stuck around anyway. When Donizetti featured the armonica’s haunting sound in the ‘Mad Scene’ of his 1835 opera Lucia di Lammermoor, right as the heroine loses her mind after killing her husband. That sealed the deal. Suddenly, everyone associated it with madness, and by the mid-1800s it had mostly vanished from concert halls. It sat forgotten in attics and museums instead.
The Glass Comes Back
The glassblower who brought it back. The armonica didn’t make a real comeback for almost a hundred years. When it finally did, a German glassblower named Gerhard Finkenbeiner, working out of Massachusetts, got most of the credit. In 1984, he rebuilt the armonica. He used pure quartz glass instead of old lead crystal. Quartz removed the lead poisoning risk for good. It also gave the instrument a clearer sound. His company still builds armonicas by hand today. But only about ten a year. Each one takes a lot of time and skill to make.
Keeping it on stage and screen. A small group of players has kept the sound alive. William Zeitler is one of the only full-time armonica players in the world. He’s played the Kennedy Center and shared a stage with the Blue Man Group at the Hollywood Bowl. His playing shows up on film scores too, like Big Hero 6 and Beautiful Creatures. That same strange sound shows up in Harry Potter and Interstellar. Filmmakers pick it because nothing else sounds quite like it.
Preserving what’s left. In 2023, the Danish Music Museum built a virtual reality version of the armonica. People can “play” it using hand controllers, and they hear a real armonica sound with no risk of damaging an actual, centuries-old instrument. A few original 18th-century armonicas have survived too, and one of them has been on display at the Bakken Museum in Minneapolis since 1975. Its original glass bowls broke during shipping once, and had to be rebuilt.
Not the only instrument blamed. The armonica wasn’t the last new sound to get blamed for hurting people’s minds. Radio went through this. So did jazz, rock and roll, and video games. Each one faced a “this will harm you” panic when it was new, and each time, there was barely any proof. The armonica might just be the earliest clear example of a pattern. A new, strange sound shows up. People get scared before they understand it. The panic repeats.
Where the Armonica Stands Today
The glass armonica’s future looks steady, but small. A few honest problems remain.
Rare and expensive. Only a few makers build them, anywhere in the world, and just a handful of units a year. Most musicians will never even touch a real one.
Fragile by nature. It’s made of glass, and it needs clean, oil-free hands just to work at all.
Still living down its old name. Nobody has proven the “dangerous instrument” story. But pop culture never got that memo. From Lucia di Lammermoor to modern movies, the “spooky” reputation lives on.
There’s good news too. Quartz glass solved the instrument’s one real problem, for good. New tools, like VR versions, could let far more people hear it, with no need for a fragile original in the room. The armonica probably won’t ever go mainstream again. But as a strange, eerie voice in film scores and small concerts, it has found a home.
