The Sisyphean Journey of AI, in a hospital room two people can get the same diagnosis but their recoveries are always different. A computer can read the report- “You have Stage II, we can treat this.” A doctor will stop, pull up a chair and say “We will get through this together.” There is a difference between these two ways of talking to someone. It is the difference between doing a job and really caring about the person. This is something that computers can try to do and even get pretty good at, but they can never really be, like a person because they do not have feelings like we do.
We live in a time when we really like things to happen fast. We want answers accurately, we want to make decisions quickly and we want solutions immediately. Artificial Intelligence is a part of this change. It is changing the way we do our jobs, the way we learn and the way we live. Artificial Intelligence is good at getting things done quickly and accurately. It can work all the time without getting tired. Artificial Intelligence can do things in a few seconds that would take people a long time even, several days.
And yet as Artificial Intelligence keeps getting better , one question is becoming more important:
Can a machine which can do everything faster also understand people better?
The answer to this question is interesting. It is like a path that we’re on, a path that goes from just getting things done to really caring about people and it is a path that Artificial Intelligence cannot completely follow.
The Era of Efficiency
Machines are really good at being efficient. You can measure how well they work as they always do what they are supposed to do. AI systems can scan a lot of information, find patterns and come up with answers that’re usually right. AI is already being used in public services like banks, hospitals, schools and companies that help customers.
For example- a student who is bad at math can use AI tools to get help. A company can look at thousands of job applications in a few minutes. A hospital can use AI to find out if someone is sick before they even know it themselves.
AI is around us even when we are not working.
* Food delivery apps can guess what we want to eat.
* Voice assistants can answer our questions fast.
* Navigation systems can help us drive around traffic and get us where we need to go on time.
AI does not get tired. It does not lose focus. It does not make emotional mistakes. It performs. And for a world that often values results above all else, this seems ideal. But human life is not only about performance. It is about experience.
Lack of Empathy: A different dimension
Empathy is not about getting things done fast. It takes a lot of time. It needs a lot of patience. It is about listening, stopping for a moment and sometimes just being there for someone. Empathy is about putting yourself in another person’s shoes to feel what they’re feeling, like their joys, sorrows and reacting in an understanding way. Think of a worker who just lost someone close but still comes to work.
A computer program might look at how less productive they’re and say they need to do better. A human boss might say, “Take all the time you need. We are here to support you.” The difference is not about being smart or logical. About being human. Empathy does not make things faster but it makes life more meaningful. It is the meaning that makes life worth living.
The reason AI cannot truly understand
Artificial Intelligence can understand feelings. It can’t feel them. It can tell when someone is sad by their way of talking, tone or their face. It can say things that sound nice and comforting but it doesn’t feel sad. It doesn’t remember emotions from experiences. It doesn’t know what it’s like to lose someone you love or to make a mistake or to love someone deeply. Human kindness comes from what we go through in life. We get better at understanding others when we hurt, when we get through times and when we connect with people. AI on the other hand learns from information. Not, from living a life. This makes a difference.
When a person says they understand something it is because they have been in a situation like that before. Artificial Intelligence says it understands too, but this is just based on numbers and chances. The difference between the Artificial Intelligence and a person is what stops the Artificial Intelligence from being able to understand and care about how people feel, which is a big part of empathy and the Artificial Intelligence is not good at empathy.
A Reflection based on real life
Imagine you are in a classroom and one of the students just stops taking interest in the class and doesn’t participate in anything. A computer system that uses artificial intelligence can keep a track of the presence, absence or the performance. It can make a report that says “Problem detected.” But a teacher will see more than that. They will see that the student is behaving differently, not maintaining eye contact and being very quiet. The teacher will ask the student “Is everything okay?” That one question can make a difference.
Sometimes the problem is not that the student is having trouble with the school work. It is that they are having trouble with their feelings. Maybe the student is feeling pressure from their family, is scared of something or is dealing with something sad that they cannot talk about. The artificial intelligence system sees patterns in the numbers. The teacher sees a person who needs help. The teacher can understand how the student is feeling. That is very important.
The student needs someone to care about them. That is what the teacher can do. The computer system is good at seeing what is going on with the numbers. The teacher is good at seeing what is going on with the student. That is the power of caring about someone. Careers Where Empathy Cannot Be Replaced
There are jobs where feelings for others is not a plus—it is the base.
1. Teaching: Shaping Young Minds and Hearts: Teaching is not about giving out information. It is about building confidence, curiosity and character in kids. A teacher knows that each student is unique. Some pick up things fast while others need a push. Some are self-assured while others are struggling in silence. A computer program can give answers. It cannot see when a kid feels like- nobody notices them. A teacher can motivate a student to trust themselves. That trust can change their life forever. Trust is built on feeling for others, not just being fast.
2. Healthcare: Healing Beyond Medicine: In healthcare being efficient helps save time, but being empathetic saves lives in another way. A patient doesn’t come with just a medical condition. They are a person who’s scared, unsure and feeling vulnerable. A machine can find diseases before a human can, but it can’t comfort a patient before an operation. Also, it cannot understand why a patient asks, “Will I be okay?” with a fear in their voice. A doctor who really listens, a nurse who calms their worries, a caregiver who’s kind- These moments really count. Healing is not just about getting treatment. It is also about having trust. Trust builds when we show empathy to patients and patients feel that they are cared for.
3. Mental Health: The Depth of Human Pain: Mental health is one of the fields which is clearly beyond the reach of AI. A person who is dealing with anxiety or depression does not always need instruction. They need someone to understand them. They need someone who can listen to them without labelling them as wrong, or who can be with them when they are feeling hurt or who can help them figure out how they are feeling, especially when it is hard to put their emotions into words. Artificial intelligence can give people ideas and ways to deal with their problems. It cannot really feel the depth of suffering. Unless and until that depth is felt, healing remains incomplete.
4. Social Workers: Hands behind compassionate actions: Social workers have to handle tough situations like extreme poverty, neglect and the distress of natural disasters. These are not areas that you can just figure out with your brain, they need you to really care about people, be patient and understand the complexity of emotions. When you are working with people who are really struggling, it takes a lot of time to get them to trust you. You have to show them that you are looking after them. Computers can look at how people behave in groups which is again about data. When someone is really upset or in a bad spot a computer cannot help them feel better, like a human can.
5. Leadership: Leading people, not machines: Leadership is not just about making decisions. It is about understanding people. When you lead, you have to think about the people you are working with. A leader who only cares about getting things done, might get success faster but it won’t last long. On the other hand a leader who listens to their team, helps them and understands them builds a strong team for the long run. Employees don’t just do what they’re told. They react to how they’re treated. If you treat them well, they’ll work harder for you. AI can help make work easier. It can make things run smoothly but It can’t make people loyal or trust you. That’s something you have to do yourself. The goal of leadership is not to control people. It’s about connecting with them.
6. Creativity: The Expression of Experience: Art and craft, creative writing, and storytelling comes from human experience. AI can create poems, stories, and scripts. It can copy ways and structures. But the most powerful creativity which is born from real emotions like love, loss, hope, struggle can’t be copied. A poem that touches hearts has truth within it. AI can generate content but humans create meaningful content. Why a fully efficient world can be a risk. If we only think about getting things done fast we might forget about something that really matters.
Imagine what it would be like if:
* Patients get the treatment but nobody talks to them
* Students learn things quickly. They do not feel good about themselves
* Employees do their jobs well. They feel a lack of belongingness.
This world would probably work just fine. But it would not be a very nice place. It would be like a machine.
When we only care about getting things done and not about how people feel it makes people feel lonely. Efficiency is very important but we also need to think about how people feel and that is why Efficiency without empathy leads to people feeling isolated and alone which is bad for not only the people, but for the whole society.
The cause of this incomplete journey
The journey from being efficient to being empathetic is not about fixing technology. It’s about being human.
Empathy is not something you can write a code for because it’s not a reaction. It’s a real feeling people have.
To be empathetic you need to have:
* Emotional memories
* Personal struggles
* A sense of what’s right and wrong
* A connection with others
Computers and AI systems do not have a life like humans do. They do not learn from experiences like we do. They just process information. That is why no matter how advanced AI becomes it will always be, on the outside looking in when it comes to understanding and feeling empathy. It will never truly be empathetic.
The way forward is about finding the balance
We do not have to choose between Artificial Intelligence and humans. The future is actually about bringing the good things about Artificial Intelligence and the good things about humans.
Artificial Intelligence is really good at doing things accurately. It can handle a lot of data and do things very fast.
Humans are good at understanding people and caring for them. Humans must be the ones to show empathy and make connections with others.
For example, a doctor can use Artificial Intelligence to help figure out what is wrong with someone but the doctor should also be the one who talks to the patient and shows them kindness.
A teacher can use Artificial Intelligence tools to help students learn but the teacher should also be the one who supports the students when they are feeling sad or upset.
A leader can use data to make decisions but the leader must also listen to what people are saying.
When we find this balance between Artificial Intelligence and humans, we can make a world that’s a good place to live, which will also be productive and efficient. It will also be a place where people are treated with respect and care.
The Human Advantage
In the rush to get things done we can easily forget what really counts. Speed is impressive no doubt and accuracy is equally important. Being able to understand and share feelings is what truly changes things. Artificial Intelligence will keep getting better. It will get faster, smarter and more capable.
There is one area it will never be able to touch. Where real emotions exist, where personal experiences shape our understanding and where connections with others give life its meaning.
That area is uniquely human. Maybe that’s not a limitation of AI but a reminder to us.
A reminder that in a world with lots of machines, our biggest strength is not how well we work but how deeply we feel and connect with others.
The path from being efficient to being empathetic isn’t about reaching a goal.
It’s about embracing our humanity at every step of the way.
That’s a journey which no machine can ever take.
