Essay On:

International Political Happenings in last ten years and its effect

Russia and Ukraine’s bilateral relations have always been a topic of political discussion, not only between the two countries but among numerous countries of the world.

Ever since the Soviet Union disintegrated, the relationship between both the countries have undergone various levels of ups and downs. When in 2014, the global aspirations of the Ukrainian government came in front of Russia, since then the two countries have gone through several conflicts with each other but this war has proven to be the worst one of them all. The rising tensions and problems between them led Russia to invade Ukraine thus, trying to break its developing ties with USA.

Russia and USA’s Relations

Russia and USA’s relations have never been very friendly and the unsaid Cold War between them is very much seen by the rest of the world. Thus Ukraine’s warm relations with USA did not result well for it. Even though the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991, Russia still does not want any of country to be a part of NATO for it thinks it could affect the Russian Union. On the other hand, Ukraine is keen to be a part of NATO because it thinks it could strengthen the Ukrainian government politically and help them in case of any external attacks. However, Ukraine being a part of NATO is not seen very beneficial for Russia because the country would be under threat by the NATO countries as they would get a point on the Russian border.

Security Issue of Russia

The concerns were not just limited to Russia’s security issues. Another problem was that Russia had annexed Crimea in 2014, and the Russian government was concerned that if Ukraine is included amongst the powerful NATO countries, Ukraine will try to gain its control over Crimea. The Russian president, also expressed his concerns on this issue in a press conference where he said that the people of Crimea will be a home if representation for all Russians, Ukrainians and the locals of Crimea but that country would never bear a flag and be recognised amongst the world. Not just that, Putin has also asked the countries in the west to stay away from issues like these which Russia considers to be dealt by them on their own. Not just that Putin now wants to regain its influence all over the 14 soviet countries that it lost in 1991. Therefore, the main reason why it does not want Ukraine to become a country that is supported by the most politically and militarily strong countries of the world because if that happens it won’t be able to take control over the nation.

Different Parts of the War

Ukraine had also agreed to some conditions put by the United States of America to make Ukraine a part of NATO. Moreover, it agreed to USA to set up some medical labs in the country which could severely affect the Russian Union. Thus adding to the list of reasons for a stand-off between both the countries.

The ironic part about the war is that even after so much of destruction and heat between both the countries, Putin states that the two countries share a common historic and spiritual space and thus it is an extremely tragic experience for both the unions. Although USA provided support and military elements to Ukraine, it could not sustain in front of Russia and suffered extreme levels of destruction. Thus, the condition put forward by russia to Ukraine was that it will not join with the West and the NATO and not plan anything against Russia. Moreover, the Russian President also asked Ukraine to demilitarise and drop its weapons, thus becoming a neutral state.

But was this negotiation able to settle the war? In March, the Ukrainian president was somewhat ready for negotiations, but from then onwards the views changed and Ukraine wants full restoration of its borders which have been under Russia since 1991. Therefore, this war of choice by Russia just proved to be a disaster for both countries, killing thousands of civilians and soldiers, ruining infrastructure and homes and major international isolation. The economic status of both the countries have been affected severely because of the war. This stand off between them did not result in the improvement of Russia-Ukraine relations or beneficial for any of the countries in anyway in fact, the West and the NATO are the ones benefiting from it.

Final Words

The Ukrainians will continue to defend their country and the Russia won’t be ready to change its views and thus, such disastrous decisions will only result in increasing hatred from both the countries towards each other which will take years to be overcome.
