Let me take you two decades back. I want to show how my entertainment has shaped over the years. It started with Power rangers. I was crazy about it back then. Yes, I was always the blue power ranger. SPD, Dino Force, Thunder force-I used to watch them continuously even before I knew what is a binge watch. As a child, cartoons were my world.
Tom and Jerry and the movies Nutcracker, Shiver Me whiskers, every time Cartoon Network played these movies, I was there to rewatch them again. Dragon tales is my forever love. I used to wish one day like every other child who was watching it then, even I would get a chance to visit Dragon world and do the same adventures. Including these cartoons, Richie Rich, Mickey Mouse and Popeye made my childhood wonderful. Did I forget Barbie? I would never forget something which made my entire childhood. And I was the Sleeping Beauty of course, I love her. Barbie and the 12 dancing princesses was my absolute favorite.
The way they discover the flowers and the magical world lying underneath still feels dreamy. Then Pink Panther, Pokemon, Ben 10, MAD, Doraemon, Chota Bheem and Courage the cowardly dog entered my entertainment list .I still love Art Attack despite my failed attempts to show my creativity. Be honest, who didn’t wish they had a magic pencil after watching Shaka Laka Boom Boom? Finally, thanks to all the cartoons mentioned for making my childhood beautiful. Books are entertainment too, but let’s keep that aside, I don’t read.
Moving on, what’s new? I started focusing on films and became a total movie buff. I used to watch a lot of regional films and children’s favorite films. Cartoons never left me though. Movies became more close to me and I found out my favorite genre to be horror and suspense. Not joking, but I can proudly say I watched almost all best horror and survival game related films. Conjuring is my all time favorite. Then growing up, I have developed my interest in web series and dramas. Boys over flowers is my first introduction to Korean drama And what a start it has been-amazing! Time flew, not my interests. Later, I still remember the day I watched Train to Busan What a film it is!! My interest for other language films has raised a lot.
I have some favorite films. There will be some films which stay with us. And I think it is directly proportional to how much you relate to it and what is it that caught your attention and can’t get out of your mind. I started realizing how much effort is put into a film and what they are trying to explain. Looking back, I felt movies as a celebration then. Teen me!!
Then comes the streaming services, which is a total gamechanger. Prime Video and Netflix brought films more close to me and I have more films to watch now. The best point is I can watch the film online without downloading it and if I want to watch it offline, I can download it too. Honestly, this made life easy and it was more convenient to movie watchers like me.
I loved the fact that I can watch a lot of documentaries. This increased the ease of watching films whenever I want and I am left with a seamless streaming experience.
Next is something which I never imagined coming. I never thought something would change the way I see films. While pursuing my masters, whole class must watch films in the auditorium together as part of a course. That is a big turn to me as a movie buff which I had never seen coming. The Magdalene sisters, A love to hide. The Color of Paradise, Two women were some of the films played .All the films were very thought-provoking .The Magdalene sisters show the harsh realities of Magdelene asylums and show the abuse on women who were labelled as “fallen women”.
The powerful storytelling clearly showed the harsh conditions, forced labor and the physical and emotional abuse at the hands of nuns .A love to hide is a French film that gave voice to oppressed communities in the society. It showed the atrocities of Nazi camps. The Color of Paradise, an Iranian film is heart wrenching. It is the story of a young boy who is blind and is disliked by his father. The acting is very natural. Even though the focus is on the life of a blind boy and his relationship with the family, the bond between the boy and his father is central to the narrative. Keeping the main plot aside, the film shows the beauty of Iranian landscape. The hills, forests, the bright sunlight, everything just brought life to the film. This film was played in New York Film festival in 1999 and received a standing ovation. Two women is the story of two women and their lives. This film shows how friends stand for each other in hard times.
I feel movies have the power to tell strong stories and can change society. The entertainment world, through the medium of films, can address sensitive social issues end educate people on what’s happening around them. That is how my perception on entertainment has changed. I feel films and documentaries are not just entertainment, they can show realities not known to many. Some films make us question, What I have just seen, is this really happening in the society ? Am I living in the same society where people are ill treated this way. It even questions your self thought on what we are contributing to society, what can I do from my side to stop these atrocities and to help humanity.
This is how my entertainment world has been over the years I love how it has changed through phases and made me realize what entertainment mediums can do other than just “entertaining”.
