To introduce, of all the musical instruments created, the piano is a special instrument due to its versatility, expressive range and influence over almost every genre of music. From the concert halls of Europe to the modern studios in Seoul, for over three centuries the piano has remained an essential tool for the composer, performer, and producer alike. Because the piano is able to produce both a melody and a harmony at the same time, it enables one person to produce an orchestrational effect. Unlike many instruments that are only able to produce melody or rhythm, many believe that the piano is one of the most complete instruments in existence.
The significance of the piano extends to every genre, not just to classical music. Jass, blues, pop, rock, gospel, film scores and modern K-pop all incorporate the piano into their structures. Songwriters use the piano today more so than ever before, as it enables a clear representation of harmony to be formed while the melody is also clearly structured as well. One such songwriter is SUGA from the group BTS. Widely recognized as a rapper and producer, SUGA utilizes the piano in a way that impacts the entirety of his work and the melodies that he uses show that traditional instruments still hold up to the use of modern technology.
History and Development of the Piano:
The invention of the piano is credited to Bartolomeo Cristofori around the year 1700 in Florence, Italy. Prior to the piano’s invention, two instruments the harpsichord and the clavichord- were popular among players. Both had drawbacks: since the harpsichord utilized plucking to play, players were unable to adjust the volume by striking the keys with more or less force. Although the clavichord’s volume could be altered, the sound that it produced was inaudible to a concert hall.
Cristofori’s piano, or more appropriately, pianoforte, combatted these issues through a unique hammer action mechanism. The piano did not pluck the string in order to produce sound, but rather it struck the string. Each key corresponded to a hammer that, when the key was struck, made contact with a string which subsequently produced a sound. The loudness of the piano note could thus be increased or decreased depending on the force with which the player pressed the key. The instrument would eventually acquire its name from the ability to play both piano (softly) and forte (loudly) in Italian.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the piano experienced dramatic development. The introduction of iron frames instead of wood allowed musicians to draw the strings more tightly thereby giving them richer tones and louder sounds. The length of the keyboard lengthened gradually as well from roughly five octaves to eighty-eight keys thereby giving composers more scope for compositions. In the nineteenth century, due to industrial manufacturing, the piano went from being an instrument exclusive to the upper class, to a household necessity and a symbol of enlightenment in the lives of average households. To this day, despite the development of digital instruments, the acoustic piano is considered the best at conveying expressive performance.
Interestingly, few of Cristofori’s original instruments are known to still exist, but museums and private collections show us that a number of Cristofori’s pianos do still exist and are indeed able to be played after over 300 years.
How is a Piano Made?
Despite appearing to be a simple instrument, a piano is actually made up of twelve thousand five hundred separate parts.
The Keyboard: The keyboard consists of 88 keys and a total of 52 white keys and 36 black keys. Every note that can be produced by the piano is mapped to one of these keys. When a key is struck, the following series of reactions is set in motion.
The Hammers: Every key is connected to a felt covered hammer; a felt hammer that, when struck, makes physical contact with a key and consequently produces a sound. This hammer, however, is removed from the string immediately after striking so that the note produced may ring clear.
The Strings: A typical concert grand piano holds a minimum of two hundred strings. Thicker, longer strings produce lower pitches while thinner, short strings produce higher pitches. Most of the notes produced by the piano will have two or three strings struck at the same time in order to maintain the richness and depth of sound produced.
The Soundboard: Often regarded as the ‘true voice of the piano’, the soundboard is made mostly of spruce. Its only purpose is to magnify the minute vibrato produced by each of the piano’s strings. Without it, the note would hardly be heard.
The Frame: A modern grand piano uses a cast iron frame which can support over twenty tons of string tension. Without this incredible tension held steady across the piano’s surface, the piano would constantly be out of tune.
Pedals: Most pianos include three pedals.
The damper pedal allows notes to continue vibrating after the keys are released, creating sustained, flowing sounds. The soft pedal shifts the action slightly, producing a gentler tone.
The sostenuto pedal, found mainly on grand pianos, sustains only selected notes while allowing others to remain unaffected.
The interaction of these components demonstrates that the piano is not merely a musical instrument but also a remarkable example of mechanical engineering.
How the Piano Works: The Science Behind Its Sound
The piano is a marvel of combined mechanics, acoustics and physics. When a pianist presses a key, a finely balanced lever system transfers the movement to a hammer that strikes the appropriate string with controlled force before immediately rebounding. At this fleeting moment, the string is free to vibrate at its designated pitch. Alone. Producing very little of itself, as it moves only a tiny amount of air. The vibration is transmitted to the piano’s soundboard via the bridge. This much larger surface transmits the vibration’s energy into the air, allowing the instrument to create the rich, resonating sound it is known for, and how it gets it power from the soundboard.
Three things: string length, thickness and tension determine how high or low the pitch will be. Long, thick strings will vibrate at a low rate; short, thin strings at a high rate. This is what gives many more of the bass notes than there are treble ones, taking up proportionally much more room on the inside of the piano!
Another wonderful feature of the piano, but one you might not be aware of, is sympathetic resonance. When a note is played nearby strings tuned to a frequency that harmonically relates to that frequency might vibrate too, although that key was never even touched!

When it comes to the pedals, the sustain is for richer sound, though improper use could muddy or blur tones and lose the overall sense of the music. Listeners tend to find the overuse of the sustaining pedal slightly annoying, for experienced musicians it can create a beautiful legato and link all of the necessary notes together making the song feel and flow like water.
There is an often-overlooked aspect to being an advanced pianist: the quality of one’s listen. Great pianists continually balance the roles of the foreground and accompaniment, ensuring that more important musical elements are prominent. The development that occurs over time, through this combination of control and perception, explains why mastering the piano is often a lifelong endeavor rather than a matter of years.
Types of Pianos:
The piano is a highly evolved instrument that has taken on numerous forms adapted to specific performance settings and purposes.
Grand Piano: The zenith of acoustic piano technology, the grand piano uses horizontally positioned strings which allows the mechanism of striking the string and key repetition to be quicker and provides musicians with greater control over their dynamics. A concert grand is typically more than two and a half feet long, is found in nearly all performances, symphonies and auditions due to its capacity of dynamic and timbral expression.
Upright Piano: The upright piano is a compact version, utilizing strings that are placed vertically on the piano mechanism. This makes them ideal for schools, homes, and smaller music studios where space is a luxury, while still providing a high-quality acoustic sound. In tonal richness, it may lack a little bit of the overt capability of a grand, however, it is one of the most accessible instruments for music instruction.
Digital Piano: Using electronic sound waves and samples instead of vibrating strings, digital pianos require no tuning or maintenance, have no limitations on headphone usage, and have a variety of instrumental samples and a record function, whereas a professional believes the instrument, in its current state, cannot adequately replicate the subtly nuances of a traditional acoustic piano.
Hybrid Piano: These unique instruments attempt to bring together the best of bothworlds, blending an actual acoustic piano feel of the hammers and a string section with the convenience of the digital keyboard.

Today, the piano is still, without doubt, the go-to instrument for songwriting due to the fact that the keyboard layout clearly displays the relationship of the notes and keys, thus making the task of creating a melody that goes well with the chords and harmonies fairly accessible for any composer. Many producers start writing and composing their songs solely with the piano and add subsequent electronic instruments and orchestral arrangements to it later in production.
The influence of the piano can also be heard quite prominently through K-pop. Despite the fact that the genre depends a lot on the digital side of production, many songwriters use the piano as a draft for songs and as a focal point for emotional ballads as it can perfectly communicate sincerity, honesty, vulnerability, and the complexity of emotions. In this way, the advancement in technology hasn’t completely removed the traditional, human-made instruments, but rather expanded their capabilities.
