A tutor who takes four batches a year explains the same chapter four times. Across five years that becomes twenty deliveries of an explanation which stopped improving somewhere around the second one. Students receive it once and lose most of it within a fortnight, which is why the doubt session before every test tends to cover the questions it covered last year.
Discussions about independent tutoring usually centre on fees, results, and competition from apps. The structural problem sits elsewhere. A tutor’s income is capped by available hours, and a large share of those hours goes into repeating explanations that already exist in finished form inside the tutor’s own head.
The Repetition Tax
Anyone who wants to see the size of this should audit a single week of their own timetable and mark each teaching hour as first delivery, revision, or doubt clearing.
Most tutors are surprised by how little of the week falls into the first category. Revision is usually the same explanation compressed. Doubt sessions cluster tightly around four or five predictable sticking points that barely change between batches. Reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. Free-body diagrams in physics. The treatment of adjustments in final accounts. Every tutor reading this can name their own list without pausing to think.
From the student’s side none of that repetition is waste. A student hearing something for the first time needs it delivered properly. The waste sits on the supply side, because delivery is being paid for with a resource that cannot be recovered, while the parts of teaching that genuinely require a person get squeezed. Diagnosing why one particular student is stuck. Adjusting pace mid-session. Pushing a strong candidate harder than the batch average.
The cost also shows up in growth. Taking a fifth batch, raising fees, or moving into online teaching all need free hours, and repetition consumes precisely those hours.
Why Recording the Live Class Does Not Fix It
Record the sessions and share them. Most tutors have tried it, and very few keep it going past a month.
A ninety-minute class produces a ninety-minute file. Students do not rewatch it, because reaching the four minutes they actually need means scrubbing past attendance, a discussion about the test date, and the settling-in period for a batch that arrived late. The explanation is in there somewhere. Nobody can find it.
Recorded classes also belong to one batch. They carry student names, references to a test held last Tuesday, and answers to questions nobody else asked. Such a file ages badly and cannot be handed to next year’s group.
Audio is the third obstacle and the most practical one. A phone propped on a table under a ceiling fan, with traffic outside, produces something a student abandons inside the first minute no matter how good the teaching was.
What tutors need is not a recording of a class. It is a short structured explanation of one concept, built to be watched alone, at night, by a student who missed the session or did not follow it.
Building the Explanations That Get Repeated Most
Raw material for those explanations already sits in every tutor’s files. The handwritten notes copied onto the board each year. The question bank. Last batch’s printed handout. The slides prepared for an online class during the pandemic and never opened since.
Converting those documents into watchable video used to be the expensive part, because it meant writing a script, recording it cleanly, then editing. A finished video can be translated into another language with the script and the on-screen text handled together, across 88 languages and 175 dialects, a list that includes Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Punjabi, and Urdu. For a tutor in a Tier-2 city whose students read an English textbook but reason in their home language, this is not a cosmetic feature. Students who follow an explanation in the language they think in tend to be able to reproduce the logic later. Students who only decoded it in English tend to reproduce the words.
Two smaller functions deserve a mention. Published videos can be password protected, which matters when the material forms part of what a family is paying for. A video can also be duplicated and then edited, so a version built for one batch can be adjusted for another without starting again.
What Changes in Practice
Twelve short explanations covering the recurring sticking points convert a repeating cost into a one-time one. The doubt session then stops being a repeat lecture and becomes diagnosis, which is what it was meant to be.
A second use emerges once the first few videos exist, and it is the one tutors report as the bigger gain. Sending the explanation out before the class rather than after it changes where the session starts. Students who arrive having watched three minutes on adjustments in final accounts arrive with a specific question about one adjustment, rather than with a blank expression and a request to do the whole topic again. The live hour then goes into problems rather than into definitions. This only works if the video genuinely gets watched, which is why length discipline matters and why the completion figure is worth checking rather than assuming.
Parents are the third consideration, especially for tutors competing against branded coaching centres. A parent who can watch structured material in a language they read comfortably has something concrete to weigh against the fee. Tutors consistently underestimate how much this matters at the point of renewal.
There is also a measurement benefit that live teaching has never provided. The analytics view includes completion rate and average watch time. Most students stopping an explanation at the ninety-second mark is precise information about where that explanation breaks down. A room full of polite nodding offers nothing equivalent.
Where the Approach Falls Short
Tutors who adopt this expecting too much of it give up quickly, so the limits are worth stating plainly.
Video does not diagnose. Why one student cannot solve one problem is frequently unrelated to the concept being explained. It may be a gap from two years earlier, an arithmetic habit, or exam anxiety, and finding it requires somebody watching that student work. No recording substitutes for that, and a tutor who markets recordings as equivalent to live teaching is inviting a conversation about fees that will not go well.
Generated scripts inherit the weaknesses of the source. Notes full of abbreviations and shorthand that only the tutor understands will produce narration that is vague in exactly those places while sounding entirely confident. Every script needs reading before it is shared.
Syllabus revisions create maintenance. When a board changes a pattern or a competitive exam adjusts weighting, the affected videos have to be rebuilt. Cheaper than re-teaching, but not free.
Under sustained attention, the generated presenters still register as artificial. Where the tutor’s own credibility is the point, such as a message to parents or a first-session introduction, a rough recording of a real person works better than a polished avatar.
Desktop and Chrome are effectively required, which is worth confirming before committing a weekend to the work.
A Practical Way to Begin
Building a library first is the common mistake. Build one explanation and watch what students do with it.
Choose the doubt that comes up most often across batches. Take the notes that already exist for it, run them through the free tier at Summary length, watch the result once, and correct whatever is wrong before sharing anything.
Send it to the students who raised that doubt last month. Over the following fortnight, check the completion rate and check whether the same question returns in the next session. If it does not, the method holds for that subject, and the remaining eleven explanations become a weekend’s work rather than a project.
The recovered hours go somewhere specific. Either into the fifth batch, or into the three students who have been quietly falling behind since June and have not yet been asked why.
