Writing an essay is no small feat, it takes minutes and hours, and sometimes even days of deep thinking before coming up with a masterpiece. While a writer is focused on the content of the essay but he/she must not ignore the importance of presentability. Now, the question is what does it mean by the term ‘presentability’? In this context, presentability means how well the essay looks in its appearance so that the readers are attracted to reading the essay.
One of the key elements that come into mind when one talks about presentability is the readability factor of the essay if it’s a handwritten essay or the suitability of a font if it’s a typed essay. The margins, as well as font size, are also taken into consideration when talking about presentability. Since the topic is about the best font for essay writing, the focus would be entirely on the most appropriate font and font size for essay writing so that readers can enthusiastically read an essay without any worries.
What is a font?
Before diving deep into the suitability of a font, one of the most important questions that come into mind is- what is a font? A font is a text character that is displayed in a particular style. There are different kinds of fonts that MS Word offers and one has the liberty to choose any one or even more than one for the sake of enhancing the outlook of their essay. Moreover, font sizes also matter while writing an essay as too big a font or too small a font can be an obstacle in leaving a long-lasting imprint on the minds of readers. Thus, the right font size is a key element while writing an essay.
Serif and Sans Serif Font
Though there are different categories of fonts one of the most famous ones is the serif and sans serif font. A serif font is ornamental in its look. In other words, the text characters have an extension at the corners to give it an elaborate look. One of the most known serif fonts is Times New Roman. The other serif fonts are- Georgia, Palatino, etc. On the other hand, one can guess the meaning of sans serif by its name- the one without(sans) serif. This is why these are simply called serifs as well. Sans serif is simple text characters. One of the well-known sans serif fonts is Calibri. Apart from it, other sans serif fonts are- Arial, Helvetica, etc. It depends from person to person on which one they choose while typing an essay. Although it is generally seen that sans serif are preferred because it plain and simple in their structure and hence, they are considered to be more readable.
Ideal Font Types
- Times New Roman- As mentioned earlier, this is a serif font. This font is one of the oldest fonts to be known and was earlier the default font type for MS Word. The text characters give extended strokes and are thick or thin at different points of the text character.
- Calibri- This font type comes under sans serif font and is currently the default font type of MS Word. These are plain text characters and are preferred while writing essays for their readability factors.
- Arial- It is a sans serif font that can be used for writing the body of an essay because text characters give a bolder look that can not give too much strain on the eye for reading.
- Georgia- As an alternative to Times New Roman, one can even choose Georgia as the ideal font for essay writing. This serif font has thin strokes and would give an elegant appearance to the essay.
- Cambria- This font is slightly varied from Times New Roman and can be used for writing the body of an essay as the font is easily readable.
Though numerous fonts can be found for writing when writing an essay, the aforementioned ones are best suited for essay writing. One needs to keep in mind that two similar-looking fonts must not be used in continuation otherwise it would be quite impossible to differentiate.
Apart from the above discussion on font types, the other focal point is- font size. Though digital systems provide different font sizes, one should be conscious enough in selecting it as the text should not be too big or too small. MS Word has fixed 12 as the default font size. Accordingly, one can bring a variation by choosing the heading to be slightly larger in font size such as selecting 14 or 16 for the heading.
A presentable essay with good content sums up the definition of an essay writer. This not only leaves a lasting impression on the minds and hearts of the people but also elevates the self-worth of the writer.
