Imagine not being able to switch on electric lights. How dark streets and dark houses would be — and factories, too! Now take a moment to consider how much we take for granted. Thanks to an ingenious invention, lights can be switched on in a matter of seconds. The light bulb has come to affect everything from home life and education to the way work gets done.
The story of the light bulb is not only the story of a great inventor, but also one of scientific curiosity and rivalry.
So who invented the light bulb? The answer has several names and includes such well known inventors as Thomas Edison, whose work in the late 1800s made it possible for light bulbs to be used more widely and regularly. Another pioneer was Joseph Swan, a British physicist whose studies of electric lighting also led to the development of the incandescent light bulb.
The World Before the Light Bulb
Long before the invention of the light bulb, people were accustomed to using candles, oil lamps and gas lamps. These could be wonderful sources of light, but they also involved a degree of hazard. Moreover, it was often difficult to obtain a light source that burned consistently and that lasted for long.
As cities and towns and factories grew around the world, inventors saw an opportunity to make lighting available in a different way — by harnessing the power of electricity.
The Early Experiments with Electric Light
The invention of the light bulb was the result of years and years of experimentation. In fact, in the early 1800s, a number of well-known scientists and inventive minds were already working on electric light.
In 1802, English chemist Humphry Davy demonstrated an early form of electric lighting. He used a battery and carbon rods to create an arc of electricity that was bright enough to illuminate a room. Arc lights were also dazzling displays of light, but they weren’t for the average home.
Other inventors experimented with different materials in a number of ways in order to create lights that would shine reliably. Some were successful but none were able to create a light that would last long and that was simple to use. The filament — the glowing strand of metal — needed to be enclosed in some kind of chamber. The vacuum needed to surround the glowing filament was also important.
The incandescent bulb — a bulb that glows to produce light — was a promising technology. The challenge was making it dependable and inexpensive enough for everyday use.
Thomas Edison and the Light Bulb
When people ask who invented the light bulb, they’re likely to be told Thomas Edison, but he wasn’t the only person working on the project. In fact, there were inventors before him who had already made significant contributions toward creating the modern light bulb. He may have been the most famous, but the reality is that Edison built upon previous discoveries.
In the 1870s, Thomas Edison and his colleagues were working on a new design for incandescent light bulbs. They used a carbon filament that could glow for some time. His experiments led him to create a dependable light that could be used in lighting homes and offices and that could be part of a commercial lighting system. Edison and his colleagues also worked on ways to deliver electricity to more than one lamp at a time.
So why is Thomas Edison so strongly associated with the invention of the light bulb? One reason is that he worked diligently on ways to bring electric lighting to the masses. It wasn’t enough to simply create a glowing strand of carbon — he and his team had to find a way to get electricity to it reliably.
Another reason is that Edison understood that in order for electric lighting to truly become a fixture of everyday life, it would need a full infrastructure of support. Generators and switches and wire had to be created so that more than one bulb could be illuminated at the same time. He made those contributions, too.
Joseph Swan: Another Pioneer of Incandescent Lighting
When it comes to the question of who invented the light bulb, there is another name that deserves to be mentioned — and that name is Joseph Swan. Like Edison, he experimented with incandescent lighting, and he also made significant contributions to the cause.
Joseph Swan was a British physicist and chemist who was one of the first people to experiment with electric light. Some say that he made his first electric lamp sometime in the 1860s. However, at the time Swan was experimenting with carbon filaments, a vacuum was not available, and electrical supplies were not abundant.
As techniques and technologies improved, Swan continued his work on incandescent lighting. He was able to demonstrate an improved lamp in 1878 and made a public display of electric lighting in 1879.
So what does Joseph Swan’s story tell us? It tells us that the invention of the light bulb was not the work of one man — it was the joint effort of many who were working on similar problems at the same time.
Edison and Swan — Scientific Rivalry and Collaboration
Joseph Swan and Thomas Edison were both pioneers of incandescent lighting, and their work led to the creation of a number of electric lamps. However, their stories are not simply the story of scientific rivalry — they also represent a scientific collaboration.
In the years that followed his initial discoveries, Swan demonstrated his own lamps. At the same time Edison was also working to develop his own system of electric lighting. In 1883, the two men worked together to form the Edison and Swan United Electric Light Company. This company would come to be known as Ediswan.
Edison and Swan’s work together helps to underscore the importance of not only recognizing one inventor who may be more well known than the rest, but instead acknowledging the contributions of everyone who worked on creating incandescent lighting.
How Does an Incandescent Bulb Work?
An incandescent bulb works by heating a thin strand of metal called a filament until it begins to glow. The electricity that is run through the filament meets some resistance, and this causes the filament to become incredibly hot.
Encased in glass, the filament glows without being burned up — at least, not right away.
In the early days of incandescent lighting, carbon was used to make filaments. Later on, tungsten was used because it could stand the heat even better.
However, incandescent bulbs had one major drawback — the filament glowed when it was heated, but much of the electricity was wasted in the process of heating it up. In short, incandescent lighting did not make very efficient use of electricity.
A Timeline of the Light Bulb
The invention of the light bulb was not the result of one great discovery — it was the result of many small ones. The following is a timeline of the light bulb, highlighting some of the most significant discoveries:
– 1802 – Humphry Davy demonstrates an electric light made of carbon rods and a battery.
– Early to mid-1800s – Scientists and inventors continue to study electric light, filaments and vacuum technology.
– 1860s – Joseph Swan develops an early incandescent lamp using a carbon filament.
– 1878 – Joseph Swan demonstrates an improved incandescent lamp.
– 1879 – Thomas Edison and his colleagues demonstrate a practical carbon-filament lamp; Joseph Swan demonstrates his incandescent lamp in Britain.
– 1882 – Thomas Edison’s Pearl Street Station delivers electricity to customers in New York City.
– 1883 – The Edison and Swan United Electric Light Company was formed.
– Early 1900s – Tungsten filament lamps become more significant in electric lighting.
– 20th century – Fluorescent lamps offer a different approach to lighting homes and businesses.
– Late 20th and early 21st centuries – Compact fluorescent lamps and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) become popular lighting options.
How the Light Bulb Changed the World
Homes and streets and factories were all transformed by the advent of electric lighting. Night was no longer as dark as it once was. Moreover, it was no longer as isolated — people could travel and study and go out to the movies or the theatre with much more ease.
As the power of electricity became evident and as power stations and power lines were built throughout the world, electricity became increasingly important. It fueled home appliances and it fueled industry. However, it took time to make these developments, and in the meantime the light bulb remained one of the most significant inventions in modern history.
From Incandescent Bulbs to Modern LEDs
The invention of the incandescent lamp made it possible to light homes and businesses. However, it also inspired scientists and inventors to look for other ways of lighting up the world.
Fluorescent lamps use electricity to excite gas atoms, creating ultraviolet light, which in turn causes a phosphorescent coating to glow. They’re generally a better use of electricity than standard incandescent bulbs are.
Another promising technology is that of light emitting diodes, or LEDs. These tiny devices are becoming more and more common as a replacement for traditional incandescent bulbs. Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs do not use a glowing filament to produce light — instead, electrons are used to excite atoms and create light.
LEDs are much more energy efficient than traditional incandescent lamps. They also tend to last much longer. As a result, LEDs are a preferred choice for lighting homes and businesses and for lighting cars and other vehicles.
Smart lighting systems make it possible to dim lights, change their temperature and control them in other ways using an app or other electronic device.
Conclusion: A Small Invention of Lasting Legacy
The invention of the light bulb stands as one of the most exciting accomplishments in the history of technology. Because it was such a game-changing discovery, it is no surprise that the light bulb holds a special place in the annals of human history.
From the earliest days of electric experimentation to the use of tiny LEDs to light up everything from street lights to televisions, the light bulb has affected our lives in countless ways.
The history of incandescent lighting shows us that the light bulb was born out of a combination of many great minds. Thomas Edison and Joseph Swan each made important contributions to the field of incandescent lighting, and today we can reap the benefits of their work.
The next time you see a light bulb, you’ll realize just how far we’ve come since the early days of lighting up the world with candles and oil lamps.
