Effective steps for Net Zero Carbon Emission
From scripture, we learn that if we protect the environment, forest, and animals, in return they will protect our lives. Famous quotes from Buddha “In protecting oneself, others are protected; in protecting others, oneself is protected.”
To understand the subject, we need to know what net zero is? Net-zero means should be equal to the output using basic mathematics. Now coming to the next part, what emissions are carbon emissions? Carbon emissions happen by burning fossil fuels like coal and natural gas for energy. We have already heard about greenhouse gases, which are the gases (water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane) that trap the heat due to which the earth is becoming hot, and it is affecting the climate. So basically, net-zero carbon emission means that these harmful gases we are producing and giving to the atmosphere and the atmosphere should have that much ability to absorb them.
Why are net-zero carbon emissions required? Greenhouse gases contain harmful gases which are affecting the environment and human health, causing global warming. The planet is becoming hotter and hotter. The main cause of global warming is increasing the concentration of carbon dioxide and other gases of greenhouse gas. This is given by the scientists. There are some other effects of it. There are droughts, a rise in sea level leads to floods, heat waves which lead to many deaths, glaciers are disappearing, early snow melt is happening, air pollution is happening, and many diseases are happening, like allergies and asthma.
Net-zero carbon emissions have been started by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Paris Agreement). Many countries have joined this pledge by 2024. 107 countries have adopted this pledge in different forms, such as law or policy forms. More than 9,000 companies, over 1000 cities, more than 1000 educational institutions, and over 600 financial institutions have joined it. There are countries which have reached net-zero emissions, like Bhutan, Comoros, Gabon, Guyana, Madagascar, Niue, Panama, Suriname. Companies related to electricity, transportation, manufacturing, construction have to take special care to net-zero. There are many companies also are aiming to be net-zero carbon emissions, like Microsoft, Ford, Apple, Amazon, Cardano. Institutes like Oxford University set up principles for net-zero aligned carbon offsetting. There are countries which have set emissions targets for net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, like China, the United States, India, the European Union. 65% of the largest 2,000 publicly traded companies by annual revenue have net-zero targets. India has set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and for the entire economy to be net-zero by 2070.
Why is it important to achieve this net-zero carbon emission? This is important to achieve to save the planet from global warming. The climate will be balanced, meaning the planet will not become hotter. There are economic benefits as it will help in energy saving, it will lead to opportunities for new technologies, industries, new jobs in renewable sectors and other sectors like steel production. The automotive industry will get more benefit from this as vehicles will be replaced with electric, so this will provide many job opportunities.
There are many steps taken by the Indian government regarding this, like 50% non-fossil fuel sources should be used for power generation in the next 5 years. PAT approach will prevent 92 million tons of carbon dioxide emission in emissions and 2nd cycles, switching to electric vehicles, planting trees and conserving forests. Sustainable Alternative Towards Affordable Transportation (SATAT) has been launched as an initiative to set up a Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) production plant and make CBG available in the market for use in automotive fuels. Installation of Vapor Recovery System (VRS) in new and existing petrol pumps. The government has set up the circular economy action plan for different categories of a waste ((a) Plastic waste, b) waste tyre, c) batteries and d) E-Waste).
Benefits of net-zero carbon emissions:
Carbon dioxide gas is a harmful gas, so reduction of it leads to good food as a plant grows better when it gets a suitable climate. It raises the sea level, which leads to harm to the fish and other water bodies, so the reduction in climate the leads to the reduction in sea level. Air pollution happens diseases take place due to which many people die, so this policy will help in healthy lifestyle, weather condition will improve.
Conclusion:
We need to protect our environment so that we can protect ourselves as we get everything from the earth. To do so, we need to use mostly natural energy using sources of wind, solar, and water to generate electricity. Vehicles should be replaced with electrical vehicles; some new technologies should be developed to remove the carbon dioxide from the environment, Follow the policies made by the government.
