In the rapidly developing digital era, the term alternative is used more and more often, especially in the field of technology. According to the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI), an alternative is a choice between two or more possibilities. In the digital context, alternatives are often associated with various technological services that are created to meet users’ needs. This can be compared to artificial intelligence (AI), which has become one of the options to support human activities.
However, there is an assumption that careers will become an alternative in the era of AI. In fact, this idea is not quite accurate. A career is a main support in a person’s life, so it cannot simply be considered something that can be replaced. Instead, AI should be positioned as the alternative. AI functions as a supporting tool that can increase productivity, assist in research and data analysis, and fulfill specific needs such as navigation. Therefore, AI is not a replacement for human careers, but rather an option that supports human roles.
AI is very helpful in today’s fast-paced and instant life. Humans tend to want things that are practical, or what is often called instant gratification. According to Yudha Yudhanto, instant gratification is the desire to fulfill needs or wants immediately without delay. That is why AI exists, to meet this need by providing fast and instant solutions. AI is already very close to our daily lives, for example through tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and many other AI tools. In general, AI is the ability of a machine to perform cognitive functions that are usually associated with the human mind. AI can think, understand, interact with its environment, and help solve problems, even in tasks such as writing and editing. However, even though AI is very helpful, it is not always fully reliable. Sometimes, AI can provide inaccurate or even misleading information, and in some cases, it may shape responses in a way that can influence our understanding. Therefore, the best thing we can do is use AI as a starting point for research, not as the final answer. No matter how advanced AI is, we still need to verify the information and consult with experts to ensure its accuracy and reliability.
In many aspects, AI has various functions. AI is very useful in supporting work in different fields, such as helping with tasks, finding and processing information, analyzing data, and providing solutions more quickly and efficiently. In many careers, AI can be used to increase productivity, simplify complex processes, and assist in decision-making. However, a question arises: will AI be misused so that it seems to replace human roles? The answer is no. AI still needs to be used wisely. Using AI wisely can reduce risks and maximize its benefits. On the other hand, overdependence on AI can reduce an individual’s ability to learn and think critically. Based on Yudianto dan Nurcahyono (2024), there are several attitudes that can be applied to ensure wise use of AI, such as paying attention to ethics, being responsible for the results generated, and reviewing AI outputs to ensure their accuracy and accountability. It is also important to realize that AI is only a supporting tool, so the final decision must remain in human hands. Human creativity should still be used in all situations without fully relying on AI.
In the AI era, not all jobs can be done or replaced by AI. For instance, in fields such as law, politics, medicine, education, and other professions that require strong foundational knowledge and complex judgment. AI cannot replace human creativity and innovation, especially when it comes to empathy, emotions, high-level decision-making, and flexibility in thinking and acting. According to an article from JobStreet by SEEK, there are several jobs that cannot be replaced by AI, such as graphic designers, architects, musicians, and roles in marketing, especially those that require direct human interaction. For example, a graphic designer cannot fully rely on AI because design is not only about visuals, but also about understanding the client’s message, emotions, and creativity. AI can help generate ideas, but the final concept and meaning still come from humans. An architect also cannot depend entirely on AI. Designing a building requires not only technical calculations, but also consideration of environment, culture, safety, and human needs. These aspects need human judgment and responsibility. In music, a musician creates songs based on feelings, experiences, and personal expression. AI can generate sounds, but it cannot truly feel emotions or create meaning the same way humans do. In marketing, human interaction is very important. Marketers need to understand audience behavior, build trust, and create strategies based on real situations. AI can assist with data, but it cannot fully replace human intuition and communication. This shows that many jobs cannot rely solely on AI.
Building on this idea, even when we use AI, it still depends on how humans give instructions. Using AI is not just about asking simple questions, but about how we explain in detail what we want to do or create. We need to provide clear and specific prompts so that AI can truly understand our request. For example, in finance-related tasks, we cannot just ask for general answers, but we need to give detailed prompts, such as asking AI to act as a professional in finance with many years of experience and provide in-depth analysis. This shows that the quality of AI’s output depends on the quality of human input. Therefore, humans remain the ones who operate and control AI. Without human direction, AI cannot function or produce meaningful results.
Many fields of study and professions depend heavily on human logic and thinking. In law, judges are needed to make fair decisions. In politics, activists and leaders play an important role. In medicine and science, researchers are needed to analyze and make in-depth decisions. These types of jobs cannot fully depend on AI. Another simple example is in translation. AI can translate documents quickly, but translation is not only about changing words from one language to another. It is also about interpreting meaning, context, and intention. AI may translate the language, but it cannot fully interpret it the way humans do.
In addition, AI is still a system that can experience errors. Therefore, it would be difficult for a system that can still fail to fully replace jobs that require precise logic and high responsibility. AI is only an additional tool in human life. Careers that do not rely on AI are not an alternative. Instead, careers remain the main foundation, and AI is the alternative. AI exists as a supporting tool to assist human work, not to replace it. In the end, the ones who control AI systems are humans. AI does not operate on its own without human involvement. The people who program and develop AI are humans, who make AI a tool that can be used properly. Becoming a programmer is also a career. It is not an alternative career, but a real and important one, because it plays a direct role in managing, developing, and engineering AI systems. This further emphasizes that humans remain at the center of technological development, while AI is only a tool created to support human needs. In the end, everyone needs to understand how to use AI properly. People who can use AI correctly and wisely will get better and higher-quality results. On the other hand, if it is used without proper understanding, the results will not be optimal. Therefore, the ability to use AI effectively has become an important skill in today’s era.
In the AI era, choosing a career is not about finding a job that cannot be touched by AI at all, but about choosing a field that still requires human roles. Careers that involve human judgment, creativity, responsibility, and critical thinking will remain relevant and important. Fields such as medicine, law, education, research, and even creative industries still need human involvement that AI cannot fully replace. This shows that the best career choice in the AI era is not about avoiding AI, but about combining human skills with the ability to use AI effectively. Career options are not limited, but actually expanding. New opportunities are created as technology develops, especially in fields that combine human skills and AI usage. This means that instead of replacing careers, AI is opening more possibilities for people to grow and adapt.
Therefore, the focus is not only on what career to choose, but also on how we adapt. The best choice is a career that we understand, are willing to develop, and can be supported by AI as a tool. In this case, AI is not something to avoid, but something to use wisely.
