In this essay we will look at some of the best characters that were played in the Indian Film Industry, also Indian Serials & some in serials & movies of other countries.
In the Indian Film Industry we will begin with characters played by Rajesh Khanna the first Superstar & Superstar of Superstars.
Rajesh Khanna
1)Raghu : Bawarchi
It’s a unique & unforgettable character who is playing as a cook. He is actually highly educated & an expert in many things , he is from a rich family but he wants to serve happiness in the society.
So he decides to work as a cook & whatever jobs available in whichever home. He joined as a cook in one home & he does all kinds of work there he chiefly solves all problems and conflicts of family members. Spread the message of Love among them.
He says “it’s so easy to be happy but it’s so difficult to be simple”
This line he quotes from someone else but this line is thought provoking & really amuses anyone who hears.
He also says “all do their work but joy of doing others work is much more bigger”
His thoughts change others around him & is indeed a life changing experience to witness this character.
2) Anand Saigal: Anand
Legendary Rajesh Khanna plays Anand Saigal character who is suffering from incurable disease which will lead to death. He knows he will die soon but he is so vivacious & full of life others around him feel sad for him but he stays full of life.
The character teaches how to be full of life & stay joyful even when we know we are near to death.

Tara Singh – in Gadar Ek Prem Katha Movie
One of the most beautiful characters that was played in cinema ever is the character of Tara Singh in the movie Gadar Ek Prem Katha. It was played by none other than the legendary actor Sunny Deol. The character of Tara Singh was of a simple Man who’s a truck driver , who is a very simple man who is very loving, caring, funny , emotional and can fight for his love if need arises.
The movie begins with a scene of Sakina who is trying to run towards running train in order to commit suicide who has lost her family in partition. However when she tries to run towards the train suddenly Tara Singh arrives and he stops her.
Tara Singh was a truck driver who knew Sakina through college hostel in which he delivered goods before partition.
Sakina was played by Amisha Patel, so Sakina was the daughter of a rich businessman. Then the memories of Sakina & Tara Singh of the hostel show beautiful Comedy scenes.
Tara Singh was facing backlash from the people of his community to save a Muslim girl so in order to protect her he puts his blood in her head which is a ritual of Hindu marriage & says that now she’s a Sikh woman who doesn’t dare to touch her.
This goes a long way to show empathy & the human side of Tara Singh who himself had lost his family in riots.
Tara Singh decides to drop Sakina to her home in Pakistan in his truck but they fall in love & get married in India. They have a beautiful baby boy from the marriage. However Sakina happens to find out her parents are still alive so Tara Singh & Sakina get very excited to know Sakina will meet her parents. All this shows the beautiful innocent side of Tara Singh.
However then after going to Pakistan the father of Sakina forces Sakina to marry in Pakistan & remain there. Tara Singh was denied a visa for Pakistan so then he tells the Visa officer that just because one visa stamp won’t come can’t stop him from meeting his wife.
After that Tara Singh along with his son & a friend goes to Pakistan and retaliates when attacked. Then he agrees to to stay in Pakistan & embrace Islam which was the condition of Ashraf Ali, Father of Sakina.
However Ashraf Ali forces Tara Singh to chant slogans against India & then Tara Singh fights & brings back his wife & kid back to India.
It was important to share a story related to Tara singh in the movie in order to understand the kind of character he was.
He was a very simple & innocent man who was very funny and romantic who could fight the whole world for his love if the need arises.
Tara Singh is an inspiration for any man who is in love and who is attacked. Tara Singh was also very mature who was open minded to change according to the circumstances and was flexible in order to avoid fights and for the better future of his wife & kids.
The character of Tara Singh goes a long way to remind every man that the fundamental religious duty of every man is to fight for his love against all odds.
It is one of the most beautiful and romantic love stories that you could ever see. The movie has so many beautiful iconic scenes that it gives you goosebumps while you watch it.
It is needless to say Tara Singh is nothing without Sakina they both are a beautiful pair and both fight together for their love. So this goes a long way to remind us that it is also the duty of the girl to fight for her love and support the man she loves.
The character of Ashraf Ali which was played beautifully by the legendary Amrish Puri was the reason for the success of the movie. Actually in any movie it is the character of the villain which has to be very strong in order for the character of the hero to appear bright. If the villain is weak the hero becomes weak. The hero is as good as the villain in the movie.
They both must complement each other for the success of any movie.

Kashi : Ghatak movie:
Sunny Deol plays a role of a simple man from Banaras who accompanies his father for treatment of throat pain.
The role of the father of Kashi is played by the legendary Amrish Puri.
The movie revolves around a mafia gang who has become parallel to the government in the area of Mumbai.
The role of Villain is Katiya which is played beautifully by the legendary Danny. Danny along with his six brothers they are 7 in total are one of the most ferocious and notorious criminals.
The movie has a scene of how admission to hospital doesn’t happen without corruption & Kashi gets angry at such a corrupt system.
The movie is about fighting for what is right against illegal encroachment of the land by the Mafia and fighting against injustice & oppression of every kind.
This is beautifully done by the character of Kashi.
Advocate Govind : Damini
Legendary Sunny Deol played yet another amazing character of Advocate Govind in front of Mighty Chadda which was also an advocate character played by legendary Amrish Puri.
Not to forget This movie already had a strong character of Damini which was played by legendary minakshi shaishadri & his husband was played by legendary Rishi Kapoor.
The movie was always great and full of powerful characters.
The character of Govind became so popular that till this day people of all age groups remember its dialogue.
The character of Govind shows anger towards fraudulent means used by powerful people & protracted legal trials.
The character of Govind became popular only because of the powerful character of Advocate Chadda played by Amrish Puri.
Arjun Malvankar : Arjun
Sunny Deol played yet another amazing character of young educated unemployed youth. This movie shows the hard realities of youth who are widely unemployed.
When a person is unemployed & he faces notorious criminals the parents ultimately blame the youth. All this is beautifully shown in the character of Arjun.
Arjun fights for what’s right & the characters shows just because you are unemployed doesnt mean you start taking torture. You still fight for what’s right.
Narsimha : Narsimha movie
Sunny Deol plays a small goon of a big criminal played by Om Puri. Om Puri is a parallel government & Narsimha has always obeyed his orders. However The Humanity of Narsimha is still alive & he ultimately ravages the goon bap ji.
The character shows how humanity is alive even in those who are goons & they can become saviors.
Major Kuldeep Singh: Border
character of a brave patriotic major who fears no one , who is ready to fight against the enemy even when he has less troops.
One beautiful dialogue is when Major Kuldeep Singh says “another name of Life is a Problem”.
One beautiful dialogue is when he says to his subordinate “that history is a witness that no war is won by dying but war is won by killing the enemy”.
Lt. Col. Fateh Singh : Border 2
similar kind of character as Border but totally different. In this movie Fateh Singh plays Lt.Colonel , He is very strict but very soft hearted. He is strict about training cadets. He is a loving family man. His son also joined the army but became a martyr. After this Fateh Singh is broken emotionally but he still fights & takes revenge for the nation.
Brig. Baldev Pratap Singh: Jaat
In this movie which is an out & out comedy Sunny Deol plays Brig.Baldev Pratap Singh. Who travels to South & he stops for eating Idli & the people of local Mafia throw his Idli. Then he asks them to apologise but they don’t & that’s how this beautiful comedy starts & stays till end. It also has emotional scenes. The character is so amazing it catches attention from start till end & the audience keeps laughing. Sunny Deol is a versatile actor who can play any kind of roles with ease.
Jagavar Chuadhary : Poster Boyz
This is an amazing character played by the legendary Sunny Deol. This movie is an out and out comedy and the character of jagawar Choudhary is a very funny character who is obsessed with taking selfies. This character shows the fight of a common man against the corruption & mismanagement of government authorities.
Saranjeet Singh Talwar: Singh Sahab The Great
This is a very unique character which is played by the legendary Sunny Deol. The character is not concerned with revenge but is concerned with change. The character is focused on Changing the Heart & mind of the enemy rather than taking revenge itself.
Havaldar Nihal Singh: Jo Bole So Nihal

Angad Singh Choudhary: Apne
Angad Singh is a son who didn’t get into boxing unlike his father & got into a different profession. However when his younger brother who’s a renowned boxer gets cheated & battling for life & death. Angad Singh fights for the Pride of His father & family. He gets into boxing & defeats the number 1 boxer. However even after becoming Don he loves his parents , family & neighbours & tries to help them.

unforgettable character who is a Mafia but good hearted person who tries to become doctor through cheating to fulfill the dream of his father. He is inspired by Mahatma Gandhi ji & deals with people with Love.
Advocate Jagdish Tuagi( Jolly ):Jolly LLB
This is a masterpiece. The character is played by the legendary Arshad Warsi. The character is an advocate from a small town who goes to Delhi for practice. He faces many challenges of the English language however he is an excellent advocate. He is new into the field not much experienced but he is passionate for fighting against injustice & oppression. He fights a case beautifully against a big renowned advocate. The opposite Advocate says “footpath is not to sleep” Jolly replies “Yes footpath is not to sleep but also not to ride vehicles”

The legendary Amrish Puri plays a villain role which is still unforgettable. The character is so strong. He’s a funny & heartless criminal at the same time.
Gabbar Singh, Jay, Veeeu & Basanti: Sholay
The Legendary Amjad Khan played Gabbar Singh of notorious criminal Gabbar Singh. Who’s a dreaded dacoit. His acting makes a unique unforgettable character which is unforgettable in the mind of the people.
Jay is played by legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan and Veeru is played by Dharmendra. Basanti is played by legendary Hema Malini.
Jay is playing a very simple kind of character however he creates comedy through his simple character.
Veeru is a drama man and creates comedy through his acting.
Basanti is a verbose talkative woman who creates amazing comedy through her non-stop talking.

Ali Baba & Daku Asfandiyar : Ali Baba Chalis Chor serial of Alif Laila
Ali Baba is a simple honest Muslim man, his elder brother is cunning who is all the property of his brother. Alibaba does not complain and accepts life as it is . He works hard and lives in poverty but is always thankful to God. He happens to find a lot of wealth but he remains humble and kind. He helps humanity as it is done by any true Muslim.
Asfandiyar is a very dangerous and intelligent dacoit who has a gang of 40 dacoits. He is very clever & heartless.
Yuzarshif & Bano Zulaikha : Prophet Yusuf Serial
This is a 45 episode long serial which covers the life story of the prophet Yusuf or Prophet Joseph as it’s called in English.Prophe Yusuf May Peace be Upon Him being prophet of God is a very righteous man servant of God.
Bano Zulaikha is initially nice then becomes negative & then again becomes a positive character. Without a scintilla of a doubt the love story of Bano Zulaikha for Prophet Yusuf is the greatest love story. Because in this love story in the end Bano Zulaikha realises Greatest Love should be For God.

Many of the characters that we discussed have the ability to inspire the audience and bring a positive change in their life.
For an example , the character which was played by Sunny Deol in the border movie in one of the scene as we discussed it has a dialogue that “another name of life is a problem itself” now this is just one dialogue from many others in the movie is enough to inspire us when we are down & out and when we are feeling overburden of problems.
Similarly another dialogue in the same film from the character of Sunny Deol as we discussed earlier under the heading of Border movie says a dialogue “history is a witness that no war is won by dying but by killing the opponent”
Now this dialogue goes a long way to explain that you cannot win the battle of life without fighting, you cannot just accept defeat, you have to fight & defeat the problems in order to win.
Similarly the character of Anand played by a legendary Rajesh Khanna in the Anand movie teaches us to be full of life even if we are nearing death.
Similarly the character of Krishna played by Legendary Govinda in the Swarg movie teaches us gratitude never to forget those who made you or those who helped you in some stage of life.
