From fairytale-esque castles nestled in the Carpathians to vibrant cities packed with culture, Slovakia delights visitors with its mixture of natural beauty and old-world charm. Yet before you embark on your Slovakian adventure, it helps to do a bit of planning and preparation. Doing so means you can better immerse yourself in all this captivating country has to offer. Whether you’ll be sipping coffee in Bratislava’s trendy cafes or hiking the High Tatras, here are five key things to know before visiting Slovakia.

Get Your Documents in Order

Before embarking on your journey to Slovakia, it’s important to make sure you have the proper documentation. Slovakia is part of the Schengen Area, so click here to find out if you need a Schengen visa for your trip. Be sure to allow plenty of time to secure a visa if required. You’ll also want to make certain your passport is valid for at least three months beyond your planned departure. Having the right documents in hand will make your travels much smoother.

Learn Some Slovak Phrases

The official language of Slovakia is Slovak. While many Slovaks in the tourism and hospitality industry speak excellent English, it’s still nice to know a few key phrases. Learning to say “hello” (ahoj), “thank you” (ďakujem), and “goodbye” (dovidenia) will go a long way. You can also ask “Do you speak English?” (Hovoríte po anglicky?) in case you need extra help. Even just making an effort to speak a few Slovak words will likely be appreciated.

Have Cash on Hand

While credit cards are widely accepted in cities and tourism centers, having local cash on hand is still a good idea. Many smaller restaurants, shops, and markets operate on a cash-only system. So, before leaving for a day of exploring Slovak towns or nature sites, make sure to get some Euros. ATMs are plentiful, and you’ll get the best exchange rate through the ATM rather than exchanging at home or at currency exchanges.

Experience the Cafe Culture

Cafes play a central role in Slovak culture and daily life. In cities like Bratislava and Košice, locals often meet friends at their favorite coffeehouse to catch up over espresso, pastries, and people watching. Sitting down at an outdoor cafe is also a great way to soak in the ambiance of Slovak plazas and old town squares. Be sure to try a traditional Slovak pastry like the walnut-topped túrógombóc (cottage cheese dumplings). Adjust your caffeine intake if needed, because the caffeine kick might be stronger than what you’re used to!

Pack Layers and Comfortable Shoes

Slovakia boasts a diversity of landscapes, with altitudes ranging from a low point of just over 130 feet in the south to nearly 8,900 feet high in the Tatra Mountains. Even if you’ll only be in cities, the weather can shift rapidly, so layers are key. And whether you’ll be trekking mountain trails, strolling medieval alleys, or touring historic landmarks, comfortable footwear is a must. Following local fashion cues, athletic sneakers are very popular. With the right layers and shoes, you’ll be ready for anything.

With the proper documents, language phrases, money, clothing and footwear in hand, you’ll be well equipped to make the most of your time in Slovakia.
