I think the biggest party in the world is called festivals, everyone can join in festivals, even grandma and baby can also enjoy the festivals, so nowaday, many countries have their own festivals like tomato festivals in Spain and butterfly festivals in south Korea, they are all famous festivals in the world so they can get profits from the festivals.
For example, In my hometown Yesan, the weather is good and the four seasons are clear, so agricultural products are cut well, so local festivals are held in the fall. In the anthropological tradition, ‘festival’ is broadly one of religious and cultural phenomena, but for us, festivals are easy to understand as a game.
Rather, it is the biggest festival in the Yesan called “Samgook festival” that proves that it is an examination of the life we live and the essence of it. “Yesan Samgook Festival” was initially started as a food called “gookbob” by local people, but as it displays chrysanthemum, a symbol of autumn, and combines noodles, a specialty of the Yesan region, into one festival, it is a festival that is easy to get interest in religious and political limitations. Everyone was able to immerse themselves in the character. In fact, during the six-day festival period, only 70,000 people lived in the Yesan, but 400,000 people visited the Yesan Samgook festival. Moreover, they get economic profits like their income of about 15 million dollars and increase of local production.
Moreover, Brazil has the festival called Rio Carnival as Samba festival, Samba is one of the most famous dances in the world and Brazil uses this feature as an economic benefit. For example, before the pandemic,When Rio Carnival was held every year, about 60,000 tourists from all over the world visited, and about 250,000 tourists from Brazil. It is said that one-third of all tourists to Brazil come in time for the Rio Carnival. During that time, Brazil almost earned billions of dollars.
The Rio Carnival is one of the main sources of Brazil’s economic income during February to March. So they use only one source of income which is traditional dance in Brazil and can earn a lot of money from this festival. In Korea, they mostly have regional festivals like the mud festival in Boryeong and Andong international Talchoom festivals. They use their traditional things for their festivals and they can get profits from these festivals. Especially Boryeong use these skills very well. Most people know the city as a mud festival, so they can emphasize their festivals as a mascot of the city and they can earn money from the tourists from abroad and from Korea.
But there’s also the case that it’s not a successful festival. For example, In 2009, the first Queer Culture Festival was held in Daegu, and it was conducted under the slogan ‘Loves Coquets Hate’ The insufficiency of the game and the completeness of the playful aesthetics are lowered. Because LGBTQ people are different from others in Korea, where Protestantism and Confucianism are strong, the discomfort experienced by society does not even come up for discussion, and the meaning of cultural festivals as criticism and protest is fading.
So only LGBTQ people are interested in this festival and most people do not care about this festival, so people who conduct this festival would lose their money and they can’t keep conducting this festival because they do not want to lose their money. However, some countries like in Europe and US, because they have lots of LGBTQ, so they make a parade for their festival and the government also supports them to conduct this festival, so they can earn more money than Korea because they provide freedom of sexual identity. I believe festivals are not always successful because they need to consider the culture of their country and popular material for their people.
Last, I believe that festivals are not a good source to earn money, because we face a pandemic situation and every festival is paused because of covid-19, so people can’t go outside even to buy food they just order coupang or amazon. So they use an application called zoom to enjoy the festival.
For example, In korea, the festival called chungchun festival uses zoom to sell the tickets and people join the zoom meeting and enjoy the concert of the festival. This method has distinct advantages and disadvantages. Advantages are people can join the festival at home and they pay less money than before, but disadvantages are they can’t enjoy that much as in the festival and sometimes zoom has an error for connection. Because of this situation, the government lost almost 5000 billion won during the pandemic and this included other countries like Spain and France. So I believe that festivals can have an effect on the economy.
