How to focus on writing an essay

Derived from the French word ‘essayer’ – whose meaning is “to attempt” or “to try” -, essays can be considered one of the most broad academic writing formats, ranging from argumentative to narrative. Nonetheless, as this type is often defined as a literary composition that details a subject from a personal point of view, it would be correct to conclude that this is an aspect they all share in common. That said, it is essential that an essay writer inserts in his work traces of his personality or essence in a way to personalize his writing.

But then, how can it be done? Even though many think they know themselves, that is not always true. Many of the traces of someone’s personality are unknown even by the one who possesses them. This is due to Hidden Personalities which, in other words, can be described as a part of our personality that is determined by unconscious processes. Even though it’s defined as hidden, these traces of one’s personality are only hidden from themselves. This is because others can get a clear understanding of it by one’s actions and decisions since behavior conveys personality.

But why is accessing this side of one’s personality important? Well, as mentioned before, traces of someone’s personality is often reflected in his actions and the way he perceives the world. Therefore, since an essay should present personal traces, the text could reach its highest potential if the author was able to work the best with all his characteristics. An important step needed before working with your characteristics is understanding the ones you do have so that you can implement them in a clearer or deeper way into your work. Consequently, an important way to start focusing on writing an essay is understanding your characteristics and deciding the best way to implement them in the text.

However, one might ask how to access a hidden personality. Due to its name, it is expected that it wouldn’t be able to be discovered and that it would always be something secretive for the one who possesses it. Nonetheless, there are a few actions that are shaped by these unique traces about us and a way of revealing that personality can be done by analyzing day to day habits. Throughout the next part of this text, there will be a presentation of different actions that may help with the unveiling.

One of the ways is your actions towards e-mails. Some people tend to leave plenty of unread emails in their Inbox, without caring about what that will implicate in their lives, which may indicate traces of laziness or disorganization. Others always read their emails as soon as they receive it and keep them in different folders according to the topic discussed in the message. These actions evidentiate that one has a strong tendency of being extremely organized and of seeking perfection in every action. Lastly, there are also the ones that, even if they read all messages, never delete them. This is a high indication that you like a sense of security, don’t enjoy risks and prefer the status-quo. See how many things we can perceive from common habits in our daily lives, and that we might have never thought about?

One another indicator is related to actions towards likes on social media posts. A group of people often give much attention to how their online photos or videos are perceived by others. When they do not receive the amount of likes expected, they often get nervous, self-conscious and have a tendency of deleting those contents a few hours later. These types of actions demonstrate a likeability that this person is insecure and often seeks approval from others. There are, however, those who do not give as much attention to this type of media and about how it is enjoyed by others. They often think about themselves and, if they liked the content published, that is what really matters. These people have a tendency of being extroverts and confident people.

Another indicator is the temperature of the water one prefers when taking a shower. Scientists claim that warm showers are chosen to compensate for the lack of emotional warmth in interpersonal relationships. In other words, people that prefer cold showers are more likely to not enjoy others’ opinions and of being stubborn. The one who prefer warmer showers, however, have a higher tendency of being lonely.

All of these indicators can be helpful for a writer if he starts noticing in his everyday life. This way, he’ll be able to access different traces of his hidden personality and, by knowing the factors that make up who he is, can better manage them in writing. Once the author knows best about himself, he can better develop his own characteristics and preferences in the text, as well as sharing these traits with characters along the story. Consequently, a way of focusing on writing an essay is by thinking about your personality and trying to come up with ideas where they can be applied.
