A UNESCO World Heritage, also known as Gharapuri Island.

How to reach?

The best way to reach the Elephanta Caves is to first reach the Gateway of India and then take a ferry to the caves.

Ferry

The ferry costs around Rs.200-250 per person. You need to pay extra Rs.10/- to the ferry operator to get a seat in the upper deck. It takes almost over an hour for the ferry to reach the Elephanta Caves. You can enjoy the view of the ocean whilst the ferry is at its job.

The ferry timing starts from 12 pm to 5:30 pm. If you want to take a peaceful visit to the Elephanta’s, the 12 pm ferry is the best. This way you get to enjoy the serene environment of the caves.

And also, if you are a sunset person, try taking the ferry around 5:00- 5:30 pm. This way you get to experience a beautiful sunset and a view of the Mumbai skyline from the ferry.

Toy Train

The caves are at a walkable distance from the jetty, but for more ease the toy train is available here.

The Market

On your way to the caves, you’ll find a beautiful market. The items here are brought from Mumbai, and are sold at twice or thrice of the actual rate. Before you buy something, make sure it’s unique and that you are okay with paying a higher amount. There are also some stalls for you to feel refreshed and fill your belly up with some tasty snacks.

Entrance Fee

You need to pay an entrance fee amounting to Rs.10 for Indian citizens and Rs.250 for foreigners. Remember to keep the counterfoil of tickets with you.

Caves

There are multiple caves to visit. But the first two caves are prominent to the Elephanta. The other caves are quite small and under-developed.

Cannon Hill: On the top of the island, there’s a Cannon hill, which is nothing but just an old canon. Many people believe that Cannon Hill is not worth ascending the island for.

History

The rock-cut caves are believed to have been constructed between 6th Century AD and 8th Century AD. The artwork reverentially displays themes from Shaktism and Vaishnavism traditions of Hinduism. Also, the temple complex is primarily the abode of Shiva, depicted in widely celebrated carvings which narrate legends and mythologies of Shaivism.

Monkeys

You’ll find monkeys almost at every place. Make sure to look out for them. Keep all your supplies nicely packed and try not to use transparent bags.

Conclusion

If you are someone who praises Indian Art and Culture, a visit to these Caves are a must for you.

Wishing you a happy and safe traveling. <3
