Competitive Examination

We should read books and learn to introduce ourselves; a good self introduction gives a lasting impression to others; one should relate his own identity in a beautiful manner. This is what is asked after entering the interview board  in mock interview (as I have seen in mock interview in YouTube).  Now we are in the 21st century and still we find it difficult to introduce ourselves in a good way; be it in our mother tongue or in English. We have to fight ourselves, sometimes we have to struggle and stumble to give  our identity in interview, in any meeting  and seminars.

I learnt while reading a book that we should introduce ourselves in an approachable manner. I have not experienced any appearance of facing an interview as yet, as I am still a school student. I learnt that I should be focused in my studies; for references, one should cling to not more than two books, because, more than two books as references could have the chances of  making me confused.

For example, I want to give an example of an autobiography; till now many biographies have been published on M K Gandhi; but, I love reading the autobiography The Story of my experiments with Truth by M K Gandhi. The autobiography is a copyright of  Navajivan Trust, 1927; and I have the reprint August 2018. The book is wonderful, nice to understand and yet extremely influential.

By reading this autobiography I need not have to read other biographies; though I have also read the life and death of MK Gandhi by Robert Payne. In Robert Payne’s book I saw some pictures of Gandhi with his friends while in South Africa. One such picture was Gandhi with his two close friends Charlie Andrews and William Pearson clicked in 1914 while in South Africa.

I think for competitive examination we should not adhere to many books as it will confuse us. For grammar books also, I feel we should cling to not more than two authority grammar books. I think if we adhere to more authority grammar books we will waste our time looking at the interesting pages and interesting arguments, and thus forgetting to making ourselves confident for the focused thing we are targeting to achieve.

One day I was taking out a few grammar books that were in the book shelf for reading the appropriate prepositions. At that time I was advised by my elders to cling to only two books and again keep the rest in the book shelf. I have in the book shelf The Only Grammar Book You’ll Ever Need, A Text Book of Higher English Grammar, Composition and Translation by P K De Sarkar, English Grammar and Composition by Wren and Martin, and a few more.

But I adhere to only to P K De Sarkar’s grammar book; and the other grammar book is English Grammar, Composition, And Usage by JC Nesfield. In the preface of this book is written: “This book is based in the main on Nesfield’s Idiom, Grammar and Synthesis for High Schools ( English Grammar, Book IV) with some additions from other works by the same author. It presents a radical revision and, in some places, an abridgement, carried out by NK Agarwal, Principal of Government Ranbir College, Sangrur, in collaboration with Dr F T Wood,…a distinguished authority on English grammar and literature…” From this book I like to read the chapter xxxv which deals with ‘words followed by appropriate prepositions’.

So I want to say that one should adhere to not more than two reference books to focus himself in reading, otherwise one will be puzzled as to what to read and what not to read. Competitive examination pave the path for prestigious position in government jobs. A visitor cannot enter at ease to meet an officer without an appointment; a visitor will have to write in a paper the purpose to meet the respective officer.

And the visitor  will have to state whether the purpose of visiting was official or personal. Everyone wants to accomplish in a competitive examination.  According to me, one should read in dedication, he should be very much focused, should have clear ideas, one should be abreast of the current affairs of our country (keeping informed about the current topics ); and one should listen to the news, the important day’s events and all these will definitely lead a good way and shall have a lasting impression in the examination.

I think if one reads about oil and refineries, he should be abreast of the first oil refinery that has been set up in Asia; he should also read the evil results of crude oil wells that are spread in the oil exploration paddy fields. Recently an oil well in Baghjan in Tinsukia District( which is in the remotest corner of Assam) caught fire. This onshore oil well blazing was considered as the world’s biggest onshore fire disaster ever which took many months to keep the control of the glowing fire.

Two fire fighters and a young electrical engineer lost their lives in the Baghjan oil well disaster. River dolphins were found dead, betel nut trees and tea bushes were churned, thousands of villagers became homeless as their houses caught fire for this fire. These are the evil effects of oil wells.  Fire extinguishers from outside of India had to be flown in to cap the fire. This is just an example; such news are to be kept abreast of daily. In that oil well disaster ( Baghjan oil well no 5) two companies had come to India to douse the fire.

One company was from Singapore, as this company became unsuccessful to extinguish it, another company from Canada came to douse the fire and this Canada company called Calgary became successful to douse the fire. Almost a similar type of fire disaster took place in an oil well in  Dikom in Dibrugarh district of Assam.

As every fire extinguisher became unsuccessful to extinguish the fire of the oil well of Dikom (ONGC, OIL, AOD  and other fire extinguishers failed to extinguish the fire), Coots and Boots of the USA had to be flown in to the well blazing site to douse it and they became successful to extinguish it. So, I want to say that one will have to be abreast of the current affairs in order to keep informed about important topic of the land.
