WHAT ARE THE TONSIL STONES?

Tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths, refer to the white or yellow-colored formations that are situated on or within the location of the tonsils.

Sometimes, people with tonsils do not even realize they have tonsil stones and this is very common. It is not easy to see tonsil stones, however, they range from the size of a rice grain to the size of a large grape. They are quite rare cases where tonsil stones may cause large complications to the health of a person.

However, they can sometimes swell up and grow into larger formations and this can cause your tonsils to swell and these tonsils are often characterized by an unpleasant odor.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF TONSIL STONES?

The tonsils in your body are made up of crevices, tunnels, and pits which are known as tonsils crypts. Several types of debris like dead cells, mucus, saliva, and food can get trapped in these pockets and can accumulate. Microbes like bacteria and fungi act on this build-up and emit an unpleasant odor.

This debris, over time, hardens and gets converted into tonsil stone.

The following are some of the reasons which can lead to tonsil stones:

  • Presence of large tonsils
  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Chronic issues with sinus
  • Inflamed tonsils

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF TONSIL STONES?

Some of these are the symptoms of tonsil stones:

  • Bad breath
  • Sore throat
  • Having trouble swallowing food
  • Pain in ear
  • Ongoing cough
  • Swollen tonsils

HOW CAN TONSIL STONES BE PREVENTED?

There are certain steps that you can take in order to prevent yourself from producing tonsil stones. These prevention methods against the production of tonsil stones are as follows:

  • Practicing good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth regularly and cleaning the bacteria from the back of your teeth while brushing your teeth.
  • Quitting the habit of smoking
  • Gargling with salt water
  • Drinking plenty of water in order to ensure that you stay hydrated

Tonsil stones are more common than you may think. Although they come with a wide variety of symptoms, they hardly cause any serious complications.

All you have to do in order to prevent tonsils is maintain good oral hygiene and consult an experienced doctor who can do regular checkups and keep you updated with the status of your oral hygiene.
