Queen

One of the most famous examples is ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ which combines rock with opera seamlessly. This risk-taking made Queen a pioneer in rock music and paved the way for many musicians of the next generation, including big bands like Nirvana, The Killers, and even Indonesian musicians like Dewa 19.
Queen is not only a musical phenomenon, but also a cultural icon that influenced lifestyle and fashion. Freddie Mercury, the lead vocalist, became a symbol of empowerment and self-expression, especially in dispelling the stereotype of hyper-masculinity in rock music. Freddie’s signature hairstyle and moustache even became an enduring trend. Queen fans known as ‘Queenies’ are spread all over the world, showing how their music can unite people from all walks of life and generations.
In addition, Queen also uses its music to voice social and humanitarian issues. Songs such as ‘I Want to Break Free’ and ‘Under Pressure’ address themes of freedom and solidarity, while the band is active in charity work, including fundraising for AIDS. Their legendary concert at Live Aid 1985 became one of the pivotal moments in music history that showed how music can be a tool for social change and global solidarity.
Queen’s legacy is rich and diverse. Not only did they leave behind a timeless catalogue of songs, but also influenced the way live performances are done with showmanship and intense interaction with the audience. Their albums such as A Night at the Opera and News of the World remain important references in rock music. The biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody released in 2018 brought back Queen’s popularity to the younger generation and cemented their position as a global cultural icon.
