Growing up in Manokwari, West Papua, I never truly appreciated the beauty of my hometown until I had the chance to explore it with fresh eyes. Having spent my childhood here, I have countless memories tied to its breathtaking landscapes and rich history. This time, I set out to revisit two remarkable places and dream of visiting another: Amban Beach, Mansinam Island, and Gunung Meja or Table Mountain. Each destination holds a special place in my heart, and I want to share my experiences and aspirations with you.

Amban Beach has always been a favorite spot. As kids, my friends and I would run barefoot across the soft white sand, playing games until the sun dipped below the horizon. The gentle waves, the distant hum of the ocean, and the cool evening breeze made it a place of endless joy. Returning in 2022, I felt that same sense of peace. Families were gathered for picnics, and groups of young people swam just as we used to. As I walked along the coastline, capturing the view on my phone, I couldn’t help but reminisce about the countless afternoons my family and I spent exploring the tide pools. And as always, the sunset was breathtaking, washing the sky in shades of orange and pink.

Beyond the beach, just a short boat ride away, lies Mansinam Island—a place I have yet to visit but have always longed to see. Growing up, I often heard stories from my elders about how this island marked the beginning of modern civilization in Papua. When the missionaries arrived, they brought education, religion, and new ways of life, shaping the culture that exists today. I can only imagine what it would be like to walk along the island’s quiet paths, shaded by coconut trees, feeling the weight of its history in every step. Mansinam is more than just an island; it represents change, resilience, and growth. One day, I hope to experience its peaceful atmosphere firsthand.

While Mansinam remains a dream, Gunung Meja is a place I know well. As a child, it was my playground, a lush tropical forest in the heart of the city where we imagined ourselves as explorers. Every visit was an adventure, filled with winding trails, hidden caves, and the thrill of discovery. Stepping onto the forest trail again as an adult, I was welcomed by the familiar sounds of birds singing and insects buzzing. The towering trees filtered the sunlight, casting dappled shadows along the path. Along the way, I spotted white cockatoos, bright-colored butterflies, and even a Soa-Soa lizard scurrying past, just like in my childhood memories. Exploring the caves brought a sense of nostalgia. I remembered how we used to dare each other to step into the darkness, our whispers echoing against the stone walls. This time, though, I moved with quiet respect, mindful of the bats and creatures that call this place home. It was a humbling reminder that nature exists in a delicate balance, and we are merely visitors in its vast beauty.

As I reflected on my journey, I realized that Manokwari is more than just a place I call home, it’s a living story, full of history, nature, and cherished memories. From the peaceful shores of Amban Beach to my dream of visiting Mansinam Island and the wild beauty of Gunung Meja, every corner of this town holds something special. If you ever visit Manokwari, take the time to experience it not just as a traveler, but as someone embracing its soul. For me, it’s not just a destination, it’s where my heart will always belong.
