Essay writing is a piece of write up which includes information on the topics related to the current happenings in the world, general topics such as finance, politics, geography, history, economics, literature, mass media, sports etc. Review essays can be written related to biological sciences, history, new technology developed, some tools and softwares, newly launched products, applications, books, restaurants, hang out places, movies, lyrics of songs, scripts written for plays, theatre, dramatics etc. A review essay is a compilation of primary sources on a certain subject, often research articles published in scholarly publications.

Review writing is an analytical process which tries to highlight and provide personal opinions about different subject matters which include the overall experience, good benefits, scope of improvement and some bad instances if any. The purpose of writing a good review essay includes the writers’ strong views, opinions, arguments and conclusions in a well formatted, neatly summarised manner.

Review essays provide opinions and reviews about different subject matters in a concise manner which tries to brief about the important information without running for pages. Writing a review essay involves more creative writing and is based on personal interests rather than any professional kind of writing. Review essays do not include any particular format and completely depend upon the writers’ skills and talents in expressing and emoting different experiences. This mainly includes various examples and illustrations which helps to connect with the real life incidents and circumstances.

The purpose of review essays is to provide readers with a current grasp of the study issue by carefully identifying and synthesising relevant literature to evaluate a particular research question, substantive area, theoretical approach, or technique. It is an ethical practice to cite all the references used for research and content search.

An essay written contains the main sections namely introduction body and conclusion. Good review essays follow the below mentioned pattern of writing. First comes the title section which includes the names of the author, instructor and the date of essay writing. Some professional journals or competitions may require and recommend more specifications for writing a review essay. Next an abstract should be written which provides a summary of the entire review. This is very important to draw the attention of the readers. Based on the abstract written, readers try to relate and connect with the theme. This tries to attract the reader’s attention at the very beginning.

Next is the introduction section which includes 3 main parts namely introducing the topic, stating the topic’s relevance and revealing the thesis to the readers. Introduction to the topic includes defining different terms, explaining the scope of discussion and the sole purpose of writing the review. Topic’s relevance addresses the familiarity in the topic chosen between the writer and the reader and also the relevance of the topic/theme to the discussion. This is also helpful when only the author is aware or familiar of the topic while the reader finds it unique and indifferent. This follows revealing the thesis to the readers. This is of prime interest when writing a research thesis essay. This is the main idea of any writer to connect with his readers. This should include a clear statement about what an author intends to prove and include.

Revealing about the thesis in the introduction, draws the attention of the readers to continue reading the essay further. This tries to create an interest and impact on the readers. Next is the body section which contains the discussion part. This is the part which supports and defends the title/theme chosen. Instead of just writing down a summary of the chosen topic/theme, readings from different sources must be included which provides solid evidence, proof and support for the author’s review claim. Quoting examples, illustrations and real life incidents adds more value to the written review essays. The main focus should be to analyse, synthesise and interpret the chosen subject matter.  A proper decisive conclusion should be provided at the end of review discussion which mainly tries to support and defend the cause and claim. Citing references at the end of the review essay is very essential to avoid copyright issues and plagiarism.

Review essay can be written covering about 8 pages containing the following titles namely name of the title, author’s name, titles of other subtopics and sub contents under review. Part 1 of about 1 or 2 pages should include the question or theme to be answered. This is very important to further proceed writing a review essay. The author should provide an answer to the questions raised in audience minds based on the prior readings and learnings.

Answers should be stated to the question or a conclusion should be given to the respective theme. Along with this a road map should be provided for the argument to be made by the author. This part fulfils the introduction section and then the body section follows. This follows part 2 which includes highlighting the topic/question/ theme selected. This is an elaborate section which can go about for 4-5 pages. The importance of the chosen question/theme is highlighted here.

Authors should engage in a thorough analysis of the readings, contrasting and comparing them in order to answer the selected subject or theme. An argument should be made in support of the question or the conclusion. Post this follows part 3 which is mainly based on the conclusion. This can go for around 1-2 pages. This part mainly responds to all the criticism of the answers and conclusions given by the authors. This also focuses on the implications of the author’s views and perspectives on different aspects. Further research questions to be answered are also mentioned here.

Reviews are always personal opinions about any subject matter and vary from person to person. There is no set rule that all the opinions and feedback given should be the same and exact. It completely depends upon an individual’s perspective, interests, likings, mood, expertise, experience etc. Defending the author’s views and perspectives is a key element in writing review essays. The conclusion and answers provided should be very strong and decisive without any ambiguity and confusion. A proper argument in terms of conclusion should be included towards the end supporting the cause and claim.
