Travelling has started to become an integral part of our life, a time spent to optimize your leisure time or to delve into the cultural landscape of your dream country. While this has been beneficially imbued into us, it has furthermore acted as a factor to reinforce the destination’s economical aggravations. Tourism has flourished in many of the precarious economical situations through the means of incremental revenue, job opportunities and replenishing local businesses.
As a premise, tourism is the movement of people from one place to another, often to seek an entertainment/indulging atmosphere. Its popularity has been outstanding during the proximity years, as the total number of tourists in 2024 increased to more than 11%, in comparison to 2023 (UN Tourism). The predominant cause can be postulated from the 2019 Covid outbreak, disrupting the tourism industry significantly. With this vigorous growth of people’s tradition, the influx of tourists correspondingly inclines with the revenue of visited locations.
In logical steps, it is palpable that when more people enter a region, they would naturally purchase necessary groceries/accessories, raising the income of businesses. With the increase in income, this will generate a less stagnated circulation in an economy, revitalizing the financial system. To illustrate, Fiji has rebounded back from the pernicious prevalence of Covid. It has been revealed by the IFC, that the “[GDP] growth plummeted to a decline of 17 percent” by 2020. Under such epoch, Fiji’s overtaxed situation found a path to rehabilitate after Covid: The return of tourism. As if the period of suffering was ephemeral, Fiji is back on track with international visitors, ubiquitous swimming gears in the Summer, and salient expenditures which vivids Fiji better than ever. What’s more, the interval of the absence in visitors has served as an opportunity to repopulate marine creatures, reinforcing this revival with its innate state. To conclude, tourism plays an imperative role to sustain revenue, flourishing the economical circulation.
Not only will tourism boost the citizen’s wealth, but directly generate money by integrating with the whole economic system. To explain, tourism’s objective is not solely to pleasure the visitors, but to promote their lifestyle as well. The fabric of a good tourism destination relies on a strong foundation in facilitation, rejoiceful atmosphere and the attitude of the locals. Ensuring this will require a spectrum of work, which will essentially increase the boundaries of work opportunities, indirectly bolstering the economy. Furthermore, this is not limited to only the locals.
Tourists who found the experience deeply satisfying may decide to reside in that region, potentially partaking in the workforce there. True, the term “tourism-induced-migration” has been widely used to indicate migration due to satisfaction induced through tourism. Costa Rica is a perfect example, renowned for its breathtaking climate and cordial people. In consideration of whether to live in Costa Rica, it is above par in all aspects: Stratospheric healthcare system, affordability, and a variety of residency options.
Due to this reason, tourists tend to inhabit themselves to live anew, find their new passion and live their “second” life. It is stated by Tico Times, that “the tourism industry created approximately 15,253 new jobs”, employing more than 15,000 citizens. This provides the notion that the incorporation of tourism will thrive the economic circulation in an accumulative way.
Ultimately, the replenishment of local business remains as one of the key variables in economic growth. A country’s trajectory in economic development is supported by its enterprises, and enterprises will find the locals requisite. The framework of minor business extracts and gives the biggest impressions towards tourists, as they are usually in the vicinity of reputable landmarks. It is most important for these businesses to persist; it provides a sense of authenticity and cultural understanding.
Displaying such business at a tourist destination will ensure its lucrativeness, highlighting the needs for the economy. Moreover, it is inevitable for tourists to come for a local business to continue maintaining their lifestyle. It is stated by WikiFreedom that “The local economy of many destinations around the world is highly dependent on seasonal demand”.
This insinuates the possibility of great wealth deficiency to local businessmen who heavily rely upon tourists, who arrive sporadically. The irony lies here: How will money be circulated if not for the existence of those who purchase? With the presence of tourists, this will minimize the fluctuation of monthly profit of those who run such businesses. To conclude, tourists are key to supporting minor enterprises, as they are the main source of income to the businessman. By reinforcing the gateway of supplementing tourists, this will help not only the economy as a whole, but protect ongoing companies.
In summary, tourism flourishes the economy on a nationwide scale, empowering every aspect from minor local businesses to the very stem of the society. With tourism, it is viable for the economy to thrive under many difficult circumstances, withstanding economic pressures.
