Tradition does not necessarily mean refusing to change.
A tradition can survive precisely because skilled craftspeople modify it intelligently.
The sitar’s history demonstrates that innovation and tradition are not enemies. A maker can preserve the identity of an instrument while improving its response, comfort, consistency and projection.
8. Ravi Shankar: The Musician Who Changed the Sitar’s World
The history of the sitar cannot be separated from Ravi Shankar.
Ravi Shankar became one of the most influential sitarists of the twentieth century and one of the most important cultural ambassadors of Indian classical music. Smithsonian Music identifies him among the Indian artists who played a major role in expanding Indian music’s reach in the West.
Yet his achievement was not simply that he became internationally famous.
He helped listeners outside India understand that Indian classical music was a sophisticated artistic system rather than merely a collection of unfamiliar sounds.
Shankar’s career brought the sitar into contact with audiences who had little previous knowledge of Hindustani music. His performances, recordings and collaborations helped create bridges between musical cultures.
The Metropolitan Museum notes that Shankar also helped popularize jugalbandi, a style of musical dialogue in which he exchanged improvisatory passages with tabla master Ustad Alla Rakha. The museum also connects his distinctive rhythmic style with an appreciation of rhythmic practices found in South Indian classical music.
This reveals something deeper about mastery.

Behind one sustained note may lie a piece of carefully selected wood, the shape of a bridge, the tension of a string, the resonance of a sympathetic string, centuries of craftsmanship, a musical tradition and the imagination of a performer.
