Your thought on “Essay“
How are Essay Contest important for improving writing skill. CONTEST is a word generally used for comparison of skill between two or more persons about some sort of creativity, they are involved in, may be It is true that winning a prize is a big inspiration, but this does not specify how much the work has been appreciated, be it Arts, Literature, Drama, Music, Dance or even games. Every contest is associated with a prize and/or certificate. According to me APPRECIATION of the work is much more important than winning a prize or a certificate. By reading an essay if the reader exclaims “What a great job” is much more important than winning a Medal. As for example, while seeing a Drama if the acting of an Actor is clapped by the audience, it is much more than winning a Medal. In this context there is a story. Years back a Drama was being performed in Kolkata named “NIL DORPON” about the torture of English managers. An actor acting the part of the Englishman acted so nicely that Pandit Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, sitting there, through his chappals at the Actor. The Actor put the chappal on his head and said, “This is the best prize I have ever won.” This is appreciation. Coming back to Essay Writing, the same thing is applicable. By this I do not mean to say Contest is useless. Contest is definitely necessary to inspire the writer for better writing. But again according to me for a contest or we can say selecting a better creator, subject matter should not be specified. The subject should be left to the writer. That will give him/her a chance for wider imaginations, which is a big factor for creative writing. As for example, if students of a primary class are asked to write an essay on COW, everybody will be writing almost the same thing may be a little different in using language. But if the subject is left to them, they can use their imaginations and somebody will write about sky, somebody river or somebody may even about his/her family. There will be ample scope for imagination and the examiner can justifiably judge which one is the best. That is the reason, I feel contest is to be for subjects chosen by the writers and not to be specified, As a writer I feel imagination is a great factor, Writing skill is increased through imagination. All the same I fully agree that CONTEST is an important factor for improving writing skills because no doubt that it is an INSPIRATION.
