The gloomy night is studded by the lights of the apartment buildings. I carry a bag of groceries through the maze of towering edifices, wondering what each balcony has to say.
“I am suffocating, HELP!”, screams one laden with tacky crimson lights. The other lets out a refreshing breath in the presence of lush potted plants. I chuckle as I imagine the conversation between the two.
My gaze shifts from the concrete structures to the human beings I walk past. An old man covered in layers walks hastily past me. Maybe it is his way of staying in shape or maybe he really needs to relieve himself, who is to say which one it is?
A kid with a jovial skip in his beat follows the old man, the juxtaposition of it was quite delightful. I see an empty playground to my right. It looks lonely without children monkeying around it. I enter the ground and overstay my visit as a wave of nostalgia hits.
I see a younger Sanjana fighting another child for a seat on the swing. The innocence and naivety of it all struck a chord. I am quick to abandon the swings to their melancholy. Where did the heedlessness and joy go? When did the seriousness take over, I wonder.
As I enter my building, I see a bushy-tailed, white-furred dog. I snap my fingers at it, and it comes rushing to me, like a moth to light. It brings a bright smile to my face and makes me realise it is okay to not be okay. It is okay to take a walk and allow yourself to blend into the universe as an inconsequential being. Just one wag from a furry being is all it took to realise the enormity of the universe and the minisculity of me in the larger picture.
