It is safe to say that the institution of marriage has undergone a radical transformation in the past few decades. Whereas it was once seen as a sacred bond between two people, today’s society seems to be far more accepting of alternative lifestyles and relationships. So, where does that leave marriage in 2022? Will it still be relevant, or will it have been rendered obsolete by the changing social landscape?
Relationships are Changing
People do not get married as young as they used to, and more and more couples are choosing to live together without ever tying the knot. In fact, a recent study showed that only 50% of Americans believe that marriage is necessary for a happy and successful relationship. This number has been steadily dropping since the 1950s when over 80% of people believed in the importance of marriage.
There are many reasons for this shift away from traditional marriage. For one, people are waiting longer to get married if they choose to do so at all. The median age for all people getting married is now 27 for women and 29 for men. This is in stark contrast to 20 for women and 23 for men in 1960. This delay is likely due to the fact that people are focusing on their careers and on building their lives before settling down. There are also different types of relationships sprouting up. Some women are looking at dating a sugar daddy. Other people have polyamorous or open relationships.
In addition, more and more people are choosing to live together without getting married. In 1960, only 4% of couples were unmarried but living together. By 2016, that number massively jumped to 8%. This trend is especially common among young adults, with 25% of 18- to 34-year-olds cohabiting with a partner.
There are a number of reasons why people might choose to live together without getting married. For one, it can be easier and cheaper than planning a wedding. It can also be seen as a way to test out a relationship before making a lifetime commitment. Additionally, many people believe that marriage is no longer necessary in order to have a happy and successful relationship.
The decreasing importance of marriage can also be seen in the declining rate of marriages overall. In 2018, there were only 6.9 marriages per 1,000 people in the United States, compared to 10 per 1,000 in 2000. This decline is likely due to the fact that people are waiting longer to get married and are more likely to cohabit without getting married.
Relationships Have Become Disposable
People don’t get married because relationships don’t last. With the horrifying dawn of online dating, people are less likely to commit to one person and more likely to date around. A study of 3,000 Americans found that 55% of them had been in a non-monogamous relationship at some point in their lives.
If people can’t get into committed long-term relationships, there’s no chance for marriage. And even if they could, the idea of marriage as a lifelong commitment is becoming increasingly outdated. People are more likely to see marriage as something that can be ended if it’s not working out rather than something that should last forever.
Divorce Rates are Skyrocketing
As marriage rates have declined, divorce rates have skyrocketed. In 2018, there were 2.9 divorces per 1,000 people in the United States, compared to only 1.2 in 1960. This increase is likely due to a number of factors, including the fact that people are getting married later in life and are more likely to cohabit before getting married.
The changing social landscape has also made divorce more acceptable. In the past, divorce was seen as taboo and was often hidden from public view. Today, however, it is much more open and accepted. This change is likely due to the fact that women are now more independent and less reliant on men financially. Additionally, the stigma surrounding divorce has decreased as more people have gone through it.
So, where does that leave marriage in 2022? It is likely that the trend away from traditional marriage will continue, with more couples choosing to live together without getting married. However, there will still be those who choose to get married, despite the declining popularity of the institution. Marriage will continue to be relevant for some people, but it will no longer be considered a necessary part of a happy and successful relationship.
