How to plan an essay writing contest.

We are well aware that writing is essay is quite interesting and through essay competition we get a chance to compete with other writers and share our writing incorporated with our personal opinions, it is like an opportunity to understand your faults and make improvements. Furthermore, competition encourages research on that particular topic of essay competition.

Even if you do not win the contest, still what you are left with is knowledge. But now question arise how to plan an essay contest? Well it should be kept in mind that organizing such competition is not a piece of cake. It needs planning and transparency. Let’s imagine that my team is organizing a contest named “You are writer too” well it needs funding lets skip the funding part.

First very step for organizing essay contest is to create a foundation by deciding the basic format of essay competition like theme, word count, age requirement, entry fee (if there is), deadline and general rules. Now the next step is to choose the judging panels, we will choose those people who are established writers as good judging can affects the quality and popularity of a competition that further will help for raising funds.

Once we had made the foundation, what next we need is to make advertisement of our contest, the most common mode of advertisement available to us is social media like twitter; face book (Meta), Instagram, and many more. One can get help from friends too who are ready to volunteer and there is also digital marketing, use print media too by publishing fliers to attract aspiring writers. Another important element of contest is to ensure transparency to the participants, so my team needs to update every single information related contest in the main website. If there is entry fee to participate, show it with highlighting box and make online transfer easy in quick steps.

There will be large numbers of participants; so we cannot expect that our team will be able to communicate through telephone or mobile phone, to solve such issue it is advisable to make website content easy to understand and accessible with information related to elements that judges expect from you and general rules for contest. In most of website there is a section called FAQ (Frequently asked Questions), this section relates about general queries for competition. If there is still doubt from the participants’ side then they should be given an email so they can find answers of their queries.

As we are organizing the competition, we are required to give our participants prizes and so we need sponsorships. Most of the writing contest offer cash prizes or publishing opportunities. We can also offer trophies and medals along with pen and other writing stationary. But in my opinion, certificate is one of the best prizes because it makes resume quite attractive, even if there is an abroad trip for the winner, the winning certificate is still needed and that can be really useful.

Moreover, certificates act as an encouragement for participants even if it is only a participatory certificate. Well it depends on organizers how they classified certain writers’ entry other than top 3 winning positions. The Monthly Essay Competition has totaled 3 other positions, editor’s choice, outstanding and praise worthy along with participatory certificate.

Now let’s discuss about the submission links of essay contest. When there was no internet, participants use to send their essay entries through post, but now at the age of information; sending entries through internet seems easy, but personally I do not like sending essay in document format through email Id. It is little complicated, so many competitions had designed their submission links that had made everything simple.

When participants had to send entries though email, they are obliged to send information related to Name, Email Id, Town, etc along with essay. This is the also case with submission links but instead of typing above information in document, you have to fill the online form and once you submit that essay you get a reference number that will help you to check your essay. Just like you are checking your result for University or school, you can check it too, do not need to visit the official website of contest and click on the result link. So while organizing the contest my team will make sure it has such submission link.

Thus, we conclude that organizing essay contest needs lots of work from creating foundation to making submissions easy and information easy and accessible to writers.

Participants should write the essay in easy to understand language with deep research on a selected topic. The essay should be written in the participant’s own language with interesting facts.
