The girl I wish I knew
I woke up today to the beep of my phone,
A notification that read: “Five years ago today.”
Suddenly, I’m that little girl,
Brimming with hope and pride.
I see my mother as a child,
Her smile—radiant and unguarded,
A spark that lights up her face,
The kind of joy that’s immeasurable.
It’s in the way her eyes embrace me,
Soft and warm, like a blanket on a cold day,
Wrapping me in comfort when the world feels harsh.
I remember her laugh, a melodic chime,
A sound that dances in the air,.
Her hair, glossy and flowing,
Cascading like a waterfall,
No strands of complexity weighing her down,
Each lock a testament to her carefree spirit.
Her shoulders, strong and proud,
Held high like a banner against the storm,
Before life’s burdens pressed her down,
Before the weight of the world settled in.
I trace the lines of her hands, so free,
Fingers that once danced in the air,
Her dress, a whirl of colors,
Flowing lighter than what she wears now,
Each swirl a celebration of her youth.
Her smile, a little brighter,
Teeth like pearls, each laugh a treasure,
Not a warrior or a fighter,
But a soul—
A radiant one.
That’s who she really is,
Before the world told her who to be,
A spirit untouched by time,
A beautiful echo of joy and love,
Forever etched in my heart.
