A Young Cub

Once,innocent striped stray

Crawlingagainst stained steel bars

Tumbling and tossing in gentle appeal

All seeming so surreal.

Soon,her limbs became firm

To strode across the cage

Pretending to lay in wait for prey

Yet scaring the petri dish far away.

This was the mundane

Meat and murky water, she sustained

Sharpening her claws against the rails

Left idle, she couldn’t derail.

White and orange stripes during the day

Then the evening cloak of white and black

A longing to be a tigress, brave

But locked up in a cage, her cave.
