For some people, being a teacher is a noble career path. It involves interacting with a diverse range of students, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as varied backgrounds. Throughout history, the role of the teacher has endured amidst the onslaught of technological advancements from century to century; in fact, this profession has continued to evolve in its teaching methods. From initially teaching solely through oral instruction, to the introduction of writing materials like paper, and in the modern era through gadgets. Without the role of educators, the intellectual figures we know such as Aristotle, Socrates, Newton, Einstein, and countless scholars worldwide might never have emerged or even existed. Therefore, the teaching profession has been the cornerstone of human civilization’s development for thousands of years.
These days, many people are beginning to look down on a career in teaching, largely because they view it as a boring job. They assume that a teacher simply stands in front of the class and talks, when in reality, a teacher must have a deep understanding of child psychology, how students process information, and effective strategies for presenting material so that students can fully grasp what is being taught. This profession will always exist, and even Artificial Intelligence (AI) will never be able to match or replace the role of a teacher. In today’s digital age, the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has brought about significant changes across various sectors, including education. With its ability to process data in real time and access information at lightning speed, AI is often viewed as a threat capable of replacing human roles in the educational setting. However, this view tends to be reductionist because it equates the process of education with the mere transfer of information. Although a machine can provide accurate answers, it remains confined within the cold, static boundaries of algorithms, unable to match the dynamic aspects unique to human natural intelligence.
The unique strengths of a teacher which AI will never be able to replace, lie in the emotional and moral aspects of human nature. Teaching is a profession that engages a person’s emotions and conscience, in which an educator serves as a mentor who provides inspiration, instils values, and fosters a deep sense of ethics to support students’ psychological development. AI is transforming the function of educators by mastering the provision of customized learning experiences. These sophisticated AI systems can quickly and precisely identify what a student understands and doesn’t understand in every subject, enabling lessons to be tailored to their individual strengths without bias. AI enables students to address areas of learning loss where they have lagged. It allows for the development of tailored individualized learning plans for each lesson in every subject—a task that would be unfeasible in conventional classrooms where one teacher attempts to meet the varying needs of students at once. AI is indeed capable of teaching how to solve complex mathematical equations, even those involving the most difficult theories or formulas. However, AI will never be able to shape a student’s character or understand the struggles of a student who is searching for their identity. Therefore, teachers remain an irreplaceable cornerstone, because true education is not just about stimulating the mind or achieving perfect test scores, but also about shaping a person’s identity and empathy. A teacher not only conveys information from textbooks but also encourages students to think critically. Educators assist learners in differentiating facts from opinions, as well as reliable information from deceptive propaganda. AI can quickly summarize a historical event, but only a teacher can facilitate a discussion on the complexities of justice, historical bias, and the humanitarian effects of that event. The capacity to foster healthy scepticism and intellectual honesty is a distinctly human area that cannot be programmed into software.
In addition, substituting teachers with subpar algorithm-based decision making is unwise for various reasons. Should we allow the reservoir of knowledge and experience regarding the diverse ways humans learn and how to facilitate that to be stored in a hackable, power-hungry server farm? Do you believe that the entire spectrum of human neurology, experiences, and abilities can be simplified to just an algorithm? Should we allow those algorithms to determine which behaviour’s, values, and ideas matter and which do not? Should we develop a database of personality traits for the entire population that can be seamlessly transferred (commercialized or sold) to those seeking to use it for marketing, behaviour’s modification, political persuasion, or surveillance purposes, potentially leading to significant misuse in manipulating and controlling individuals and society at large? Or compromised and exploited by unidentified groups for similar or more severe objectives, like extortion? Should we compensate teachers based on their contributions to boosting the economies of their local communities, or should we allow our education funds to be sent out of state or abroad? Have we gained no insight into the damage to families and communities caused by outsourcing and automation? Should we rely on ISPs to invest in providing quality internet service to every rural area, or should we support that using tax money to boost their profits.
Educators exhibit contextual pedagogical flexibility which no programmed algorithm can match in the classroom, a teacher adheres to a strict curriculum while also assessing the classroom dynamics in a comprehensive manner. When a student seems sluggish or uninterested, the teacher can dynamically adjust their tone, incorporate humour, or share personal analogies that relate to the student’s experiences. While AI can be proficient in offering tailored information by analysing data, educators are capable of giving individualized moral support through their intuition and empathy. Educators recognize that when a student struggles to understand concepts, it frequently stems from issues beyond the classroom, highlighting the importance of the teacher’s role as a supportive listener and as a guardian. School is more than simply avenue for learning to read, write, and perform arithmetic. School represents a small-scale version of society, being the initial setting where a person discovers the social contract. In this context, the teacher’s function as a facilitator of social engagement is essential. Educators instruct on collaborating in groups, valuing diverse viewpoints among peers, and finding peaceful solutions to conflicts. AI can certainly instruct on how to tackle intricate mathematical problems, including those that rely on the toughest theories or formulas. Nonetheless, AI will never have the capability to influence a student’s character or grasp the challenges faced by a student seeking their identity. Educators notice students’ eyes filling with tears from disappointment and offer a comforting pat on the shoulder to boost their determination. AI lacks empathy; it cannot sense a teenager’s anxiety or offer moral guidance derived from personal experiences. Consequently, educators are an essential foundation, as genuine education involves not just enhancing intellect or attaining ideal test results, but also melding an individual’s identity and compassion. In engagements with AI, the connection established is one-sided and transactional. Students inquire, AI responds. There is a lack of social negotiation, no understanding of compromise, and no growth of social intelligence. Replacing teachers with AI could lead to a generation that is technologically savvy yet socially inadequate. Educators exemplify what it means to be responsible citizens. By watching teachers’ actions how they communicate, how they treat their peers, and how they uphold integrity students learn life lessons that hold greater value than any textbook material.
Totally dismissing AI in the realm of education is undoubtedly an unwise decision. AI should be seen as a highly effective tool, not as a substitute. AI can assist educators in swiftly monitoring students’ cognitive growth or streamlining monotonous administrative duties. Thanks to technology, educators can be relieved of routine tasks and dedicate more time to offering individualized assistance to students in need of emotional support. The perfect future of education is a harmony of human intelligence and artificial intelligence. AI can function as a mobile library offering immediate access to information, while educators serve as a guide, directing how that information can benefit society. Technology offers efficiency, while humans impart significance. In today’s world, education lacking technology may lag behind, but education devoid of teachers would lose its essence. AI should not be feared it serves as a strong partner in education, achieving remarkable results. For example, the famous app for education like Duolingo, for instance. The application demonstrates how education enhanced by AI can create captivating and tailored lessons. It monitors the existing knowledge of every student and adapts lessons based on their proficiency level. It identifies when they provide correct responses and reviews topics that require additional help. AI enables each student in the classroom to learn a unique language customized to their personal level and speed. AI signifies a revolutionary technological progress. Instead of ignoring it, we ought to consistently inform ourselves about best practices and maintain our curiosity about what can be achieved. When executed successfully, we will explore how it can assist our students in achieving their utmost potential, while allowing educators to enhance their roles and increase their influence on the upcoming generation of learners.
Considering the future’s challenging and intricate nature of teaching, society must urgently shift its view on this profession. Seeing teaching as a “tedious” or “time-wasting” profession disrespects the future of society. Educators are builders of the spirit. They engage with the most delicate yet invaluable resources on the planet, the thoughts and feelings of children. The government should invest not only in internet infrastructure and hardware, but also in the quality and well-being of educators. Equipping educators with strong digital literacy training will allow them to utilize AI technology for teaching purposes. When educators receive appropriate recognition—both monetarily and socially—the country’s top talents will see this career as a primary option rather than a last alternative.
Technology will continue to advance, machines will grow smarter, and algorithms will become more accurate. However, the cold nature of computers will never be able to match the warmth of a teacher’s spirit one who can see the hidden potential within a student deemed a failure by the system. Teachers are a beacon amid the flood of information, a guide through the labyrinth of ethics, and the guardians of the flame of humanity. As long as we continue to want our children to develop as “human beings” and not merely “economic units,” the teaching profession will endure as a fundamentally human vocation and will never be replaced by any form of automation.
