Michael Andrew Fox was born on June 9, 1961, in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He developed an interest in acting during his teenage years and moved to Los Angeles at the age of 18 to pursue a career in entertainment. For professional reasons, he adopted the stage name Michael J. Fox, as there was already an actor registered under the name Michael Fox.
Acting Career
Michael J. Fox rose to fame with his role as Alex P. Keaton on the sitcom Family Ties (1982–1989), which earned him three Primetime Emmy Awards. However, he became a global star through his portrayal of Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy (1985–1990), one of the most iconic roles in film history.
In addition to his film success, Fox appeared in numerous projects across film and television, including Teen Wolf, The Secret of My Success, and Spin City. He also lent his voice to several animated characters.
Role in Atlantis: The Lost Empire
In 2001, Fox voiced Milo James Thatch, a young linguist and cartographer in Disney’s animated adventure Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Milo was an unconventional hero—shy, brilliant, and idealistic. Fox’s performance brought charm and sincerity to the character, helping make Milo one of Disney’s most unique and beloved animated protagonists.
Parkinson’s Diagnosis and Advocacy
In 1991, at the age of 29, Michael J. Fox was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He kept the diagnosis private for several years before publicly revealing it in 1998. Since then, he has become one of the world’s most prominent advocates for Parkinson’s awareness and research.
He founded The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which has raised over $1 billion for scientific studies and treatment development.
Awards and Recognition
Michael J. Fox has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including five Primetime Emmy Awards, four Golden Globe Awards, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, he was honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his outstanding humanitarian efforts.
