An informative essay educates the reader about a particular topic. It is non-fictional and mostly found in academics.

When you are revising an informative essay you should not read the entire essay, and that is not what revision is. You should read it briefly and quickly. To say in a point, you have to consider the important aspects of the essay like dates, facts and figures, places, summary and conclusion.

Revision is not going back and fussing around, but going forward into the process of creation”- May Sarton.

Do not use alternatives:

As we are discussing about an Informative essay, the information is mostly related to academics and technical knowledge. So while writing the important technical part of the essay, it would be necessitated to use the exact words without using any alternative words. The same is the case with the sentence formation and usage of punctuations or grammatical work.

For example, the word Bourgeois originally meant the affluent sections of the society. In the course of time, the same is used to denote the ordinary and common people. So, if the word bourgeois is used in the essay, do not replace it with ordinary.

Year and date:

In an informative essay, you should be absolutely sure about the data or the Information you have gathered. Without proper knowledge you should not mention it in the essay. In this regard, years and dates are very important. If a particular event took place on that particular day and if you happen to mention it wrong, then a lot of misunderstanding might happen.

For example: if you write “India got independence on 14th August 1947” it is false and a gross mistake because Pakistan got independence on 14th August 1947.

Itis just a matter of one Day in this case, but it makes a lot of difference. So, while mentioning dates or years or places, you should be careful. Sometimes, typographical errors might happen, but that is when the concept of revising comes into action.

Names and places/locations:

Regarding the names and the locations you should be cautious and look twice. If you fail to mention the name of a person/thing or an object properly, it would lead to misunderstanding. The same applies to the area/location. Sometimes it plays a crucial role, if it is related to a scientific research or an experiment, “in which place did the experiment

take place and at what time” such details should be mentioned clearly and carefully.

Scientific facts and figures:

While revising you should consider taking a look into the facts and figures. Sometimes we might happen to write it wrong, it is of utmost importance to look into the facts and figures. To be a true fact, they are declared as facts regarding the subject after a long deliberation. We can do nothing about it but mention it correctly. Later you can add your views to it. But ensuring it is correct is of utmost importance.

Main content/subject:

The part which you feel in the essay is important, should be revised again. There might be some little things, that you do not need to give importance. There will be definitely a part which conveys the maximum awareness on the topic, but it is not summary or conclusion, that needs to be considered again.

Revision is the heart of writing. Every page I do is done over Seven or Eight times.”   – Patricia Reilly Giff.

Identify the errors:

When revising an essay, you should try to mainly focus on the outline of the essay, what you exactly want to convey to the target audience. If the outline is not clear and sound, then the essay cannot convey the concept of the topic and your idea. Be cautious and re-read it and verify the errors and correct them.

Sources and references:

It would be better if you check all the sources and references mentioned are correct and did not fail to write all of them properly. Quoting of Genuine sources would be better than some unknown and unfamiliar sources. Writing the sources or references precisely and concisely would be great. Like mentioning the exact Volume or Chapter in the book is appreciated and shows the sense of clarity.

Summary and conclusion:

There is a part of the essay called Summary and Conclusion. Both are different side headings. Summary is a part where the writer summaries the entire essay into two or three paragraphs. They express the whole information in a nutshell and includes the utmost important points in it. Conclusion is different from Summary. In conclusion the writer will write the take away and his/her views to the essay.
