Start writing your essay, either for a school or college assignment or for some contest. It will always be difficult to start or initiate your essay for any academic purpose. Many thoughts and ideas are swirling around in your head and want to come out. But it would never be easy to execute them properly with accuracy and in sequential order. Here comes the part of planning. It allows a proper channel for thoughts and ideas to land on paper in exceptional fashion.
Why is planning important?
Having an assignment to submit and many other things to do. Why should we waste our time on planning, especially when we have a shortage of time? Is it worthwhile to invest your time in planning rather than directly jumping into the process of searching for and writing an essay? The answer is a big yes! It is important to plan because if you are failing in planning, then in reality you are planning to fail. So it is important for you to plan your essay for your own clarity about the structure and organization of time as well as the essay.
Phases of Planning
There are two phases of essay planning.
- Mapping out
First, you need to outline what your essay will encompass. By mapping out all your main, primary points and content before writing, you will be able to not miss any important point that will provide evidence and weightage to your arguments.
- Timetable for milestones
Make a timetable for yourself to ensure that you devote enough time to each part or section of your essay and that you complete your work and meet the deadline on time. In order to manage and tackle the boundaries of time, you can break the whole essay task into small chunks. These milestones help you complete the task in a more effective way, instead of stressing out at the last moment.
Creating a Structure
It would be very enticing to just sit down and write, especially if you are too close to the deadline, but it is pivotal to create a structure for what your essay will cover, what things and points must be included before writing.
The very next thing is to figure out how many paragraphs you will include in your essay, especially for the word limit proposed.
While planning the structure of your essay, make sure that every paragraph of an essay must contain the focus (the main point to be delivered). A paragraph usually holds 7–11 sentences. You can change the number of sentences depending upon your word limit.
Freewriting
In order to get ideas out of your mind/head, the main activity we need is brainstorming. In many different ways, it can be attained. Create a mind map or put all your thoughts and ideas on paper. Ask yourself a number of questions which will help to cover every aspect of the topic as possible. Asking the questions helps you to understand the topic deeply and from a new perspective or in a different light.
A Detailed Outline
After you’ve finished brainstorming, it’s time to organise your thoughts and ideas. While you put all your opinions on one piece of paper, with a lot of ideas, this will cause you inconvenience while writing an essay. Get rid of all this messiness by creating a clear, neat, and detailed outline.
The outline of ideas and questions provides the smooth and sequential flow of ideas, which will help to support your arguments in the body of your essay. This will also help to exclude all unnecessary forms and data, which cause nothing else than confusion.
Introduction
When you begin to write your essay, you start with some brief but descriptive enough overarching argument or idea. This is called a “thesis statement”. In the introduction, you provide a brief description of your topic and your thesis within 2-3 lines. The whole introduction consists of 2-3 paragraphs ( mainly depends on the essay word limit). A good thesis statement mainly depends on an argument or position and explains how it will achieve the strategic plan.
Body
In the essay body, you have to provide the arguments and prove your thesis statement. The body of an essay typically consists of 3–4 paragraphs (depending on word count). In each paragraph, prove one or two of your arguments or ideas with proper evidence and facts, and then relate them to your thesis statement to prove your claim in the thesis statement.
Each paragraph must start with the topic focus sentence (main argument). This will let readers know what the paragraph is about. By defining and proving each argument, you permit your essay to flow or run in the smoothest way possible by transitioning from one idea to another.
Conclusion
This last paragraph provides a preview or recap of your essay. The conclusion lets the readers know what the essay is about, what the thesis statement is, and what ideas and thoughts support your thesis statement with factual evidence. This is actually the brief summary of your essay.
Hacks To Make a Flawless Essay
There are some tips which help you to improve your essay and remove mistakes, making it a flawless and high-grading essay.
- Use wordbook
- Read it aloud
- Proofreading
- Correct any grammatical errors.
- Correct punctuation errors.
- Use different sources to search for a topic.
In The End
Planning is extremely important and plays an important role in your life, whether you have to plan a trip, event, daily routine, or even an essay for a certain success and favorable outcomes. Planning will help you acquire confidence by structuring your schedule. Organize all your thoughts and ideas about the topic and divide your essay into small milestones which will be easy to achieve, then provide arguments and prove them in favor of your thesis statement.
