As said, “We are all now connected by the internet, like neurons in a giant brain” by Stephen Hawking. Yes! Indeed it is. The dawn of the Internet is one of the best historical events which has taken place. It has not only changed the local but also the world scenario. The Internet has involved itself in each and every field – from regular online shopping to NASA. Even for entertainment we use the internet.

We can imagine a scene, where all the stars in space are stagnant in their positions. They want to share their thoughts and knowledge about everything they know and also expect to reach the same. They want to speak to their neighbor who is five light years away about their transformation to red giant or to supernova, but they can‘t do so  because they do not have any communication option.  We are extremely lucky to have the internet to solve our communication problem.

Many individuals were able to showcase their talents via the internet. The essays we write, the growth of music and dance industry, the biotechnology improvement is through communication via the Internet.

INTERNET

The Internet is a vast network that connects computers all over the world. In other worlds it is composed of hundreds of thousands of interconnected networks.

HISTORY

The red roses are very pretty especially when they are attached to their stems in the garden. Imagine these roses to just float in air without a stem. It isn’t possible, as the connection is not present between leaves or roots, hence no prepared food or water will reach and their survival is at risk. Similarly, in the early 20th century we were also like floating roses; had no connections, neither with other roses nor with root and stem. Our research works, our information were not able to reach others quickly.

The 1st computer, ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer) was ready to use on February 14 1946. After its arrival many other computers were made. These were very huge so they were permanently kept in work places. It worked individually, and no computers could share any data to each other. So the data sharing was done manually or by postal services. It became difficult to share information when the distance became larger than 100 miles.

In the mid 1960s, the US Department of Defense (DOD) gave an order to one of the agencies under it named ARPA – Advanced Research Project Agency to find a way to connect these computers for the ease of sharing data. This order was given because many researchers worked in different agencies which were far from each other. When researchers used to work on the same subject, the information of one’s findings were not able to reach on time to others and double papers were made for the same project. To save time, avoid duplicate works, and also to save the expense or funds given on the research, this order was given.

By 1969, ARPA connected four computers in – UCLA (University of California at Los Angeles), UCSB (University of California at Santa Barbara), SRI (Stanford Research Institute), University of Utah by wiring. Now the research papers could be communicated with these computers easily. In 1971, it expanded its connections towards eastern side of the US and named this network as ARPAnet.

BIRTH OF INTERNET

In 1972, the researchers under ARPA, Vint Serf and Robert Bob Kahn, had a belief that two or more networks like ARPAnet can connect together and the devices through these can share information. To do this job they evolved a device called Gateway, which connected many networks together. For this they made a protocol named Transmission Control Protocol. Which is now known as IP or TCP.

In this way the INTERNET was made.

PRESENT

In the 21st century, the internet has taken a perfect shape and evolved as a bright shining flower pot. The world set-up has changed dramatically. In the past it was just a dream of few people that we can speak to people face to face when they are far, but now it is a child’s play to do.

We have also come so far in medicine that with the help of an unknown DNA, a computerized image of the person or organism can be created.

Nowadays, the internet is used in ample situations and works. To do many money transactions, online activities, medical works, biotechnology etc. We have knowledge in almost all the fields at our fingertips; just by the click of one button we can get access to any information from worldwide, we can even view the whole world on our devices in the form of maps.

As the pandemic has hit us we have suffered a huge loss in every field and most precisely the lives of people but because of the internet, the schools, hospitals, offices, shops, restaurants, banks, etc. were all connected and so the common man could easily stay at home during the lockdown. The Internet has also made many artists famous nationwide through social media.

We have been doing wonders and wonders never stop.

The Internet has also played a vital role in the evolution of technology. It was the biggest step towards our dreamland of the scientific world.
