The Graduate Medical School Admission Test (GAMSAT) is the entrance examination for students wishing to study medicine, dentistry, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary studies in Australian, British, or Irish universities.

According to statistics, it has been estimated that at least 10,000 students apply for this exam every year, and one of the toughest sections of the exam is the essay section, also known as the Written Communication Section.

If you’re worried about acing this part of the exam, here are some useful tips and tricks!

1. Practice Writing

This might sound quite obvious to anyone preparing for the Written Communications section, but practising doesn’t just mean writing tons of essays without knowing how and where to improve.

When you’re practising writing essays, make sure you write on a variety of topics. This will improve your general knowledge and also help you figure out the areas where you need to work harder.

You might come across topics that seem tougher than the others, but the more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll feel after a while.

When you start practising, it’s not mandatory to time yourself from the beginning. Focus on improving your written communication skill first. Once you’re comfortable, try to time yourself.

2. Create an Essay Idea Bank

A good essay idea bank can easily help you crack the essay writing section of the exam. You can either ask an experienced person for help or go through GAMSAT example essays online to figure out the topics that have been covered over the years.

Even though the topic given might be completely random, creating an essay idea bank helps you stay prepared, no matter what the topic is.

Make sure to carefully note down the essays or options that you develop during practice sessions.

For example, if you have written down ideas and phrases related to the importance of family and interpersonal relationships, you can modify the same ideas and use them for an essay on the happiest day of your life.

3. Be Concise

Being concise is also an important tip that you need to keep in mind while writing the essay. This means that you have to get rid of long, wordy phrases and sentences and replace them with shorter ones.

If your essay contains several different ideas and words packed inside every sentence, the reader will lose interest.

Moreover, this will defeat the point that you’re trying to put forward. Therefore, stick to sentences that are short and can be easily grasped by the reader.

Make sure your vocabulary is strong, but don’t unnecessarily use difficult words to make the easy look more complicated. Share only one idea in each sentence to make it easier for the reader to understand.

4. Be Descriptive

Write your essays in vivid enough language so that the reader can instantly imagine the entire theme and understand what you are trying to convey.

The difference between a mediocre essay and a good one is the language. Even if you use simple words, they need to be strung together to make complete sense to the reader.

Use descriptive adjectives and creative phrases so that the reader can connect with them. Descriptive words usually work well in reflective essays, but you can still use them in argumentative essays.

Write words that reflect the situation and surroundings to make the essay come alive.

5. Don’t Use Rhetorical Questions

At some point in the essay, you might be tempted to put down a rhetorical question or two.

While it might sound like a unique idea, it’s best to avoid using such tools because GAMSAT essay questions require you to answer in either argumentative or reflective forms.

In argumentative essays, students especially might believe that writing rhetorical questions will prompt the reader to think more deeply.

However, in reality, a rhetorical question placed in the wrong way can make the essay dull.

In many cases, the entire point of the essay can fall flat because the rhetorical question is unnecessary. So, try to come up with other innovative ways to persuade your readers to see your point.

6. Use Analogies

When you’re writing a strong GAMSAT essay, don’t shy away from using analogies. An analogy helps readers understand an unfamiliar concept more easily by linking an abstract concept to a more tangible comparison.

Conclusion

With these creative tips, you can make your essays way better. So, keep them in mind, practice lots, and don’t forget to take care of your health! Have faith, and you’ll reach your aim!
