This is a short story of my journey to become a passionate dancer. A young and ambitious lady who has the urge of achieving every little success that comes in her life. She is on her final year of graduation in Economics from Presidency University, Kolkata. She has comprehensive and all-inclusive interests who certainly believes in herself and finds every little way to make her happy and cheerful every single moment. Well, her name is Debasmita Saha.

She belongs to a middle-class, not-so-rich family with two siblings and parents, residing in Kolkata since birth. Unknowingly, the lockdown and the pandemic was a blessing in disguise for me. Those two years helped me a lot in learning the basics of western dance, which is not so well accepted in West Bengal. After facing back to back criticisms and backlashes from society and my closed ones, I decided to perform at a much bigger stage outside of my comfort zone. I performed at different college fests and also participated at the inter-college dance competitions. Those were my initials to this not-so-travelled road to success.

Gradually, I expanded my domain and participated in shows and competitions outside of West Bengal. I stood second in two of those dance competitions and secured a medal as a token of achievement. I had also been to the famous “Face-Off” round at the semi-final stage where I was selected surprisingly and then, could make it to the finals; sharing the stage with such renowned dancers from their respective backgrounds. I had secured the third position and was handed a memento and a cash prize of rupees 500.

It was quite difficult to manage everything and learn something which you had dreamt of since childhood. My parents didn’t support me through this journey; they had always thought that dance will not be reflected in your career. It is not worthy to learn dancing. But, I used to put little efforts every day to make it a huge success. The only thing that motivated me to dance is the determination and the consistency to learn something new every single day. Be it your worst day, you will still work on your progress to make it a grand success.

The thing is nothing is a waste in your life. Whatever you learn will automatically be useful in one way or the other. As said by Steve Jobs, “You can’t connect the dots by looking forward, you can only connect them by looking backwards”. Whatever you are learning today, will definitely repay you back in the future. You just have to have faith and self-belief in you if you are into learning something idiosyncratic like me.

The fact that inspires me to progress much more in life is that I have achieved a lot at such a young age and without any guide specifically. I had learned it entirely by watching random dance videos on YouTube. I used to see and learn those steps at home and then choreographed the dance entirely. So, YouTube along with the lockdown period was the best combination for me to have such a success.

Now, my parents and all my relatives praise me and support me to continue dancing in future. I had decided to fully continue with dance after my graduation and become an established dancer in the future. Till now, I had achieved a lot of prizes and certificates of achievement in dancing and is now been recognized as the “Queen of Dance” named by the society where I live and my closed ones. Today, I get calls for various dance shows to attend their workshop and to teach the new generation with this not-so widely accepted form of dance.
