Potti Sreeramulu was born on March 16, 1901, in Madras Presidency, British India (now Chennai, Tamil Nadu). He came from a modest family and showed a deep sense of dedication to the Indian independence movement from a young age. He studied at the Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute in Mumbai and later worked for the Great Indian Peninsular Railway.
Involvement in the Freedom Struggle
Inspired by Mahatma Gandhi’s principles of non-violence and civil disobedience, Sreeramulu left his job and dedicated his life to the cause of India’s independence. He actively participated in the Salt Satyagraha and other significant movements led by Gandhi. His commitment to the cause was unwavering, and he became known for his humility, simplicity, and steadfast dedication.
The Demand for Andhra State
Sreeramulu’s most notable contribution was his relentless fight for the creation of a separate state for Telugu-speaking people within India. The Telugu-speaking population felt marginalized and sought to have their own state, separate from the Tamil-dominated Madras Presidency. Sreeramulu undertook a series of hunger strikes to draw attention to this cause.
On October 19, 1952, he began a hunger strike demanding the formation of a separate Andhra state. His fast lasted for 58 days, during which he refused to eat or drink. Despite appeals from political leaders and well-wishers, he remained steadfast in his resolve. Tragically, on December 15, 1952, Sreeramulu passed away, becoming a martyr for the cause.
Legacy
Potti Sreeramulu’s sacrifice galvanized public opinion and led to widespread protests and agitation. His death intensified the demand for a separate Andhra state, and on October 1, 1953, the state of Andhra was formed, with Kurnool as its capital. This was a significant step in the reorganization of states in India based on linguistic lines.
Despite his monumental contribution, Sreeramulu’s name is not as widely known as other freedom fighters. However, his legacy lives on, especially in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, where he is revered as a hero and a symbol of selfless dedication to the people’s cause.
