Let’s face it — Maine coons are adorable. With big fluffy bodies and faces that make us fall in love with them, they’re pretty much a force to reckon with when it comes to cuteness. But are they social? If they are, are they more social than other popular cat breeds?
Let’s find out!
The Bond Between Maine Coons and Their People
Maine coons have been known for their close bonds with humans for hundreds of years. Way back in the older days, they were a useful asset for families who had to concern themselves with rodents getting into their grain and destroying their crops.
They would help control the rodent population while also providing the family with a wonderful friend to snuggle with when nights got cold.
Today, Maine coons are used less for their rodent-catching abilities and kept for companionship instead, which these extra-large lumps of love really don’t mind. It’s not uncommon to find them lounging on the couch or in front of the fire — and catching the occasional mouse if one happens to be around.
They are known by many as “the dogs of the cat world” thanks to their love of human companionship and friendly nature.
Maine Coons and Other Cats
Just as Maine coons get along well with humans, they also play with other cats. Of course, they fair well with other Maine coons but they aren’t picky when it comes to who their friends are.
These incredibly friendly and docile cats are known for making best friends with a host of other breeds, including those that are more closed off and cautious. In addition, Maine coons can also lie with other animals! This includes dogs and birds, but, with a bit of training, can extend to small animals like rats and rabbits, too.
If you’re going to introduce your Maine coon to another animal – especially a small animal – be sure to use your common sense. Don’t leave the two unattended and make sure that there are no signs of aggression from either party before trusting them to be alone together.
How To Socialize A Shy Maine Coon
Since Maine coons are normally a very friendly breed, there aren’t many instances where they need help with socialization. Of course, however, there are exceptions to the rule. If you have a shy Maine coon on your hands, we can help!
Here are four tips for socializing your cat.
1. Patience.
The key to socializing a nervous Maine coon is being patient. The process will take time but be worth the wait in the end.
2. Calm and Quiet
In addition to being patient, you should also be calm and quiet. This will help your cat to feel more comfortable and like they’re safe. It can also reduce stress.
3. Eye Contact
If you’ve ever watched your cat or dog blink at you, you’d have probably noticed that they do it slowly and almost lazily. This is a sign of trust. So, to help build trust between you and a shy cat, try blinking slowly at them to show that you are not a threat.
4. Hiding
Although it seems counterproductive, allowing your cat to hide if it wants to is going to do more good than harm. By allowing them to hide, you’re giving them the freedom to explore and get used to you on their own time.
Maine Coons are truly some of the most social cats around. They are great for multi-pet households and families with small children. They’re a great option for almost any household if we’re being honest.
