The origins of this high altruist and distinguished profession can be traced to
the establishment of the “Imperial Civil Service (ICS)”, the elite governing corps
touted to be the ‘Steel frame" of the Colonial period for almost a century
beginning from 1857. Post-Independence the ICS transformed into the IAS.
Currently, recruitment into the IAS is carried out by the Central Recruitment
Agency -Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) through a 3-Step
Eliminatory Examination procedure comprising of –
• Indian Administrative Services is the premier civil service of India and forms the
administrative arm of all Indian services
• IAS officials carry out all duties required for the smooth running of the administration
• Degree requirements include bachelors in any discipline after 10+2 in any relevant
discipline
• Satyendranath Tagore, elder brother of Rabindranath Tagore, was the first Indian to join
Indian Civil Services in 1863
