Musical Actress
The term ‘Alternate Career Option’ makes me giggle. I don’t mean any offence
to all the artists of the world or people with unconventional occupations, but it
just reminds me of the fact that I’m Indian. Indian children aren’t allowed to
have dreams anymore than they are allowed to talk back to their parents. Parents
love to meddle, especially Indian parents, whether it is a career, choice of
marriage or finance. Of course, in a career they provide choice, you can either be
an engineer, doctor or lawyer. In my case, my mother strongly urged me to
become an IIT embryo because she believes I’d be the best fit for a career in
engineering. I begged to differ. I know it is blasphemy on my part to rebel
against that idea, but I had no interest in holding down a 9 to 5 job that requires
me to build things; I’d prefer spending that time arguing with people about the
law. My first choice has always been law because it is a money-making career that
I chose for myself, a job that doesn’t require me to travel in unknown waters.
However, if I were to take a leap of faith
instead of getting plunged into the rat-race
world, I would rather rely on my artistic
interests. It’s a cut-throat world, but I hope
my passions might carry me along. My
alternate career option is to be a Broadway
singer. Ever heard of Aladdin, Wicked, Les
Miserables, Lion King and Hamilton?
These plays introduce the centuries-old tale
of Aladdin, reveal the thoughts running in
Alexander Hamilton’s mind before he
threw away his shot, explore Simba’s
journey from lion-cub to the king of the
jungle and humanize the Wicked Witch of
the West. Broadway is the dream for
theatre-nerds who would love to do
nothing but justice to these iconic characters.
