Forestry
Forestry is a science, and art of managing, planting, nurturing, and renewing of
forest resources in the sustainable and ecological way. In a broader sense, it
involves the conservation of flora and fauna for a continuous yield of good
quality and quantity of forest products for different tangible and intangible
benefits. At the socioeconomic community level, the forest provides
employment, recreation, and generates income. Besides, the forest provides
carbon sequestration, clean air, freshwater, and plays a vital role in the soil
stratification. Forestry covers the full range of terrestrial ecosystem concerns
such as wildlife management, biodiversity conservation, forest ecology, wetland
management, Agro-forestry practices, erosion, and flood control.
It is vital to know the trait and strength required before taking the forestry
program. Taking account of
education, the person who has
taken the basic course in a
science subject such as
chemistry, geography, biology,
mathematics can take the
forestry course. Also, a person
with a keen interest in observing
birds and animal behavior, or
someone concerned about the
conservation and preservation of mother earth can take up forestry as a
profession. Moreover, this profession requires the person to be physically
healthy and mentally alert at all times. Although a person may learn modern
survival skills, it is always better to know the traditional lifesaving tactics before
the adverse circumstances occur. These include following the route of the river
in case the path is lost, starting of a fire, self-defence from wild animals, living
under the tree or cave for shelter and differentiating eatable plants from the
poisonous ones. The person should also have self-determination, courage,
patience, critical thinking, leadership quality, decision-making and problem-
solving skill under stress condition in order to excel in this profession.
