Yoga
Yoga is an art, extremely subtle science and philosophy of healthy living. Seeking
spiritual progress was the primary goal of “yoga” which means union, the
merging of Atman, the individual consciousness with Paramatman, the universal
consciousness or the controller of the universe. It can be said that the goal of
yoga practice is to overcome the sufferings of human life and enrich our lives
with holistic health, happiness, and harmony.
This spiritual discipline that originated in India has an incredible journey of more
than five thousand years. From the rishis in ancient times practising yoga for
spiritual enlightenment to the patients in ultra-modern hospitals in the USA
practising yoga as a part of therapy, yoga has come a long way and is here to stay.
Over the centuries, it has witnessed many changing trends.
In the 20th century, yoga postures and pranayama became popular across the
world, primarily because of their benefits to get a strong body and improve
fitness. In the 21 century, yoga is emerging as a lifestyle to balance body, mind

and emotions. In the last few decades, extensive research has proven the efficacy
of yoga in the management of diseases and has received recognition from the
medical fraternity as a therapy.
