Skills and Knowledge
Wildlife photographers often shoot photographs of animals in their natural
environments. Different from studio or event photographers, wildlife
photography in the field is not staged. It requires skill and patience to
photograph animals in a natural setting. Wildlife photography also requires
knowledge of animal behavior, along with technical photographic skills. The job
also needs the ability to edit and present images that tell the story of the wildlife.
Education and Outlook
Independent wildlife photographers need not require to have a college degree.
However, many do have degrees in fine arts and photography from art
institutions or colleges. Agencies who hire staff photographers, such as the
federal government, often seek an additional degree in biology and zoology,
along with training in photography. They must also possess technical skills with
cameras and the ability to work with images and photographic software to
enhance photos. While it does not provide data specific to wildlife
photographers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics the number of jobs
for photographers will grow by about 13 percent by 2020, and the median pay is
$14 per hour. Wildlife photography is a very exciting and potentially glamorous
career. If you are a photographer who is fascinated by animals and enjoys travel,
this is the ideal career for you. But, you will have to create a balance between the
cost of travel and equipment and the challenges of earning an income in a very
competitive market. The quality of images in renowned publications like
“National Geographic” sets the standard for any aspiring wildlife photographer.
Remuneration
In the beginning, one can expect a salary of about Rs. 10,000 a month,
depending completely upon the ability of the person. Once established, then the
sky has no limit for professionals. Popular and reputable wildlife photographers
can easily earn pay packages ranging from Rs. 30,000 to Rs. 5 lakh a month.
