Societal Entrepreneurship: Waste

                                                      Management

As our country is developing leaps and bounds, there are various problems
which have arisen, one of which is that of waste management. According to an
estimate, urban India generates 62 Million Tonnes of Municipal Solid Waste
annually. Out of it, only 43 Million Tonnes (70%) is collected, and 11.9 Million
Tonnes (20%) get treated in the waste treatment plants. Thus, there is a great
constraint to adequate waste management in the country.
                             Waste Management as Carrer
Lack of proper skills and knowledge is one of the most important factors
responsible for inefficient waste management. It is one of the fields which has
immense opportunities as the nation is in dire need to get over this problem. The
term "Waste Management" includes the collection and proper disposal of the waste
generated using an effective procedure so that the harmful effects from same
could be minimised. The proper disposal involves the separation of waste into
different classes viz. biodegradable, non-biodegradable, followed by final disposal
                             using  the                                      required  processes,  i.e.
                                                                              recycling, landfilling,
                                                                              and convert it into
                                                                       manure or organic fertilizers.

                              • Post Corona Pandemic situation, waste management is now become necessity
                              • Getting government aids would be easier to receive
                              • The youth should come up with innovative ideas in the form of enterprenuership.
                              • Waste Management, as a career, provides ample opportunities to work along with
                                  governments or establishing own startup.

                             Waste Management and India
Although, the Swatch Bharat Mission started by PM Narendra Modi in 2014 had
a positive impact on the status of cleanliness; still, there is lack of Waste
Management policies and ineffective implementation of existing laws related to
the Waste Management. This was taken up seriously by the Honourable Supreme
Court of India, and it further went on to mention that if the current trends were
to follow India will go down under garbage one day.
