CHAPTER 11
At 2:30 pm, the children returned home from school. Bitz was
triumphantly happy as he won first prize in the speech contest.
With a flash of genuine admiration, his mother offered hearty
felicitation to him and ordered the children to take rest. After a
rebuke, Mrs. Vaken felt incredibly sad and troubled. She was
speaking less. At night, she went to her husband’s room where
her husband was in sound sleep, she seated at his bedside
holding his hand. She was in an agony of indecision. Tears were
in her eyes but she tried to look brave.
Next morning, Mrs. Vaken served bed-tea to her husband. It
seemed like nothing had happened. She consoled herself and
promised herself that she would not think about all those
freakish things. Mrs. Vaken and her cousin went to the super-
market to buy some grocery items as Mr. Vaken gave an
excuse of illness and remained at home. The super-market was
giving away a bar of chocolate to everyone who visited that
day. So, Mrs. Vaken got the chocolates for the children.
Children went to school. At home, Mr. Vaken heard some
weeping sounds when he left the wash-room. With weeping
sound, somebody was calling his name also. Firstly, he ignored
the noises, but after subsequent sounds he decided to look
over the matter. He felt that the sound was coming from
ghost’s chamber in the store-house behind the cupboard. His
suspicion was right, there was Mr. Hover Shemp himself who
was producing the same sound and was creating havoc in the
