Literature
This essay will discuss the career opportunities and prospects of the subject of
study which I have taken up, that is English Literature. This essay will also
discuss why one should take up the subject and what are the various career
opportunities associated with it.
A great American entertainer, politician, and business-man, P.T. Barnum once
said: “Literature is one of the most interesting and significant expressions of humanity”. It is
one of the subjects which has a
worldwide scope and at the same
time is diverse in itself. It deals with
the study of human emotions and
includes the study of works related
to different writers and poets
around the globe. Furthermore,
starting from the study of the
history of English literature which
gives the students an idea of the
present-day writers, it provides
insights into the literature of poets from different ages beginning from Anglo-
Saxon age through Elizabethan age, Jacobean age, age of Puritan, age of Milton,
age of Alexander Pope, the Romantic age and finally the modern and post-
modern era. Literature is something which makes us aesthetic human beings. It
is also one of the ways to express love for nature far off from the complexities of
everyday urban life. Amid the busy schedule, one wants recourse to partake of
the natural beauty, hearing the chirping of birds and to find in nature a melody
which would heal all wounds and pains of everyday life. Returning to nature
signifies returning to the lap of nature.
“The crown of literature is poetry” as once quoted by W. Somerset Maugham.
The poems of poets like William Wordsworth, John Keats bear testimony to the
natural beauties. They are poets of the era, which is known as the romantic era.
Therefore, love and romance in the lap of nature are reflected in their poetry. A
great poet from the same era, William Wordsworth in his poem “Tintern Abbey”
conceives nature as his beloved and recollects his days of childhood when he
would run like a deer, and the sound of the waterfall would possess him like a
desire. It is thoughtfully reflected in this poetry that how nature to him is an
ever-healing balm for all the sorrows and pain of everyday life.
